Irish actress\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.deadline.com\/tag\/caitriona-balfe\/\">Caitriona Balfe<\/a>\u00a0(<em>Now You See Me<\/em>) has landed the lead in\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.deadline.com\/tag\/outlander\/\">Outlander<\/a><\/em>, a Ron Moore series based on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.deadline.com\/tag\/diana-gabaldon\/\">Diana Gabaldon<\/a>\u2019s best-selling books.<\/p>\n<p>It follows the story of Claire Randall (Balfe), a married combat nurse from 1945\u00a0who is mysteriously swept back in time to 1743. When she is forced to marry Jamie Fraser (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.deadline.com\/2013\/07\/outlander-series-star-starz\/\">Sam Heughan<\/a>), a chivalrous and romantic young Scottish warrior, a passionate affair is ignited that tears Claire\u2019s heart between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHard to believe lightning can strike twice, but it surely did,\u201d Gabaldon said. \u201cThe moment Caitriona Balfe came on screen, I sat up straight and said, \u2018There she is!\u2019 She and Sam Heughan absolutely lit up the screen with fireworks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Added Moore, \u201cThe casting of Claire Randall was a long and difficult one because the role is so crucial to the success of our show.<em>\u00a0Outlander<\/em>\u00a0is told from Claire\u2019s point of view and we experience the entire story through her eyes, so it was vital that we find exactly the right actor to play her. Caitriona wasn\u2019t on anyone\u2019s radar, she wasn\u2019t on any list, but when we saw her audition tape, we immediately knew she was someone special.
