The Real Life Super Hero Project

Real Life Superheroes

For those of us watching Smallville this season, one of the ongoing story lines is public and government reaction to masked vigilantes. As young people growing up and into their abilities, we’ve witnessed every day people like Clark Kent, Oliver Queen and Arthur Curry take on the mantle of justice fighters, defending people in the name of Truth and Justice. In previous seasons, we saw the Justice Society of America and the scandal that put them out of the superhero business and now, as a new Justice League is forming, we see similar rumblings both pro- and anti-vigilante.

In a case of life imitating art here in my home state, a group of citizens has banded together to create their own team of superheroes patrolling the streets of Seattle. The Rain City Superhero Movement is a collection of masked vigilantes with military, martial arts and other special abilities. Seattle isn’t the only place you’ll find these Real Life Super Heroes, and it’s not a new movement. Heroes from all over the world are taking an active part in trying to improve the life of citizens in their communities, not only by fighting crime but hunger, disease, poverty and every other blight on humanity. Sometimes these heroes are praised for their efforts, and other times they are criticized or even mocked.

In a time when governments are failing to protect us, the interests of corporations have more weight then the needs of people, and apathy rules supreme, maybe now, more than ever, Real Life Super Heroes are needed. Maybe you can’t immobilize a thug with two fingers or take down a purse snatcher with a bola, but you can get involved and do something, however small, to improve the lives of the people in your community. From donating your time to feed the hungry at the local food shelter or helping build a home for a low income family, to raking an elderly neighbor’s lawn or participating in an AIDS or Cancer Walk, there are many things you can do to help improve someone’s life, not by spending money, which most of us don’t have much of, but time, which we spend too much of on frivolous things.

Have you thought about embracing your inner hero?

Witchblade Creator Spaces Out with “Ulysses Squared”

from GeekChicDaily:

So you think being a cyborg would be boss? What if it required getting filleted like sushi and implanted with alien tech? When astronaut Alan Ulysses Grant has an uncomfortable encounter with an alien space probe (not THAT kind of probe) he awakens to that very fate.

Ulysses Squared is the latest project from Witchblade co-creator Brian Haberlin, who describes the passion project as an illustrated novel. As he tells GeekChicDaily in our exclusive interview, “I… like the idea of kind of a children’s book for adults. Something lushly illustrated, similar to Dinotopia, but not eight panels a page.”

Designed to repair otherworldly warriors injured in battle, a lost alien craft stumbles into our galaxy. When it encounters astronaut Alan it sees his vulnerable human features as injuries. The probe ship gives him the only makeover it knows, transforming him into an a$$-kicking cyborg super-soldier. If he gets into serious danger, armor spouts out of his body to encase him for his safety (see the armor design in our exclusive Ulysses Squared image gallery). Unfortunately, the ship also gives similar gifts to an old broken-down Soviet space weapon, code-named Ares.

Though he says the theme of the story is man dealing with transformation, Haberlin’s primary motivation in creating the character goes all the way back to one of his first childhood heroes. “I really wanted to make my Six Million Dollar Man. I loved that show when I was a kid… he was like our 007, but with these extra powers.” Check out GCD’s exclusive images from Ulysses Squared, and be sure to read our feature interview with Brian Haberlin. Look for Ulysses Squared on shelves Q3 of 2011.

A Teenager’s Artistic Talent Saves His Life in New Manga Series “Genkaku Picasso” from VIZ Media

from VIZ Media:

VIZ Media, LLC (VIZ Media), one of the entertainment industry’s most innovative and comprehensive publishing, animation and licensing companies, brings the artistic styling of creator Usamaru Furuya’s manga (graphic novel) series, Genkaku Picasso, available to domestic readers now. The new property will be published in North America under the Shonen Jump imprint, is rated “T+” for Older Teens, and will carry an MSRP of $9.99 U.S. / $12.99 CAN.

Hikaru “Picasso” Hamura, a grouchy teenager with a talent for drawing, dies in a freak accident. The gods decide to revive him, but only on the condition that he use his artistic gift for the good of humanity. Picasso discovers that sketching a person’s aura yields a surreal portrait of their psyche. Stranger still, Picasso can dive into these dreamscapes and help people by exploring their deepest emotions, memories and perceptions.

Genkaku Picasso blends mind-bending artwork with the teenage drama of a talented adolescent who gets a second chance at life,” says Daniel Gillespie, Editor, Shonen Jump. “Using his artistic skill, Picasso is able to draw a picture symbolizing a person’s subconscious, and then enter that portrait and manipulate the symbols in order to help them recover from past traumas. The series’ unique plot and multi-faceted characters are sure to engage readers on many levels. We recommend Genkaku Picasso to any fan of M.C Escher!”

Creator Usamaru Furuya made a splash with his 1994 manga debut in the legendary “underground” manga magazine Garo with his innovative four-panel series Palepoli. He also created a gag series called Short Cuts for Young Sunday magazine, which was later serialized in the English-language manga magazine Pulp and published as a graphic novel by VIZ Media (rated “M” for Mature). His other works include Jisatsu Circle, a manga adaptation of the film Suicide Club, The Chronicles of the Clueless Age, a collaboration with the writer Otsuichi, and Happiness, a series of shorts that ran in IKKI magazine. Genkaku Picasso is Furuya’s first series for Jump SQ.

Comedic Webseries Explores Geekdom’s Inner Sanctum, the Comic Book Store

from Anti-Matter:

Chris Walker, comic book professional turned director, launched Anti-Matter today, a workplace sitcom delving into the lives of a group of 20-something comic book store employees and the customers that drive them crazy.

The show offers a quirky “nerds-eye view” of the world of comic fandom. Anti-Matter also digs into the the transition young adults face, moving from “Quarter Life Crisis” to “New Grown Up,” taking a playful look at identity, coming of age, and the procrastination of adulthood. “I wanted to make a comedy series,” says Chris. “My goal was to create a series that felt classic and new at the same time. So I started with what I know, comics and figuring out what it means to be an adult on your own terms, not others’.”

Each 3-5 minute episode of Anti-Matter gives viewers a tongue-in-cheek look into comic culture in a way that only an insider could deliver. Through their own “geeky” lenses, the characters try and come to terms with hating their jobs, no longer being “cool”, and getting over their own self-importance.

No bandwagon fan when it comes to comic books, Chris has been coloring comics professionally for over half a decade for the likes of Marvel and DC on characters such as Batman, Superman, Spider-Man and the X-Men. When he got the itch to expand his creative horizons and make comedies he decided to start close to home.

“If there’s one thing I know that’s funny, it’s the conversations and experiences you have hanging out at comic books stores,” says Chris. “Anti-Matter is a humorous snapshot of that world. A place any fan or retailer will tell you is full of laughs and crazy hijinks.”

The eight episode season airs new episodes on Wednesdays, the same day new comics hit shelves. To watch the series, visit antimattershow.com.

About Anti-Matter and Chris Walker:
Anti-Matter stars Upright Citizen Brigade (UCB) regulars Justin Tyler (NYTVF People’s Choice Winner, The Webventures of Justin & Alden, Sidecar), Aaron Kheifets (Co-Host of UCB Show A-Side/B-Side), Johnathan Fernandez (Stone Cold Fox) and Davram Steifler (Gorilla Gorilla).

For more information on Anti-Matter or to watch episodes, visit website antimattershow.com, or their Facebook Page. Episodes may also be viewed on You Tube, Blip TV and iTunes.

Chris Walker is a NY based writer, filmmaker and visual artist. He has developed and produced Manga Vibe, a pop culture and lifestyle show for Starz Media and Manga Entertainment. His artwork has been used in Adidas, Marvel Comics, Virgin Records and Sony Pictures offerings. Walker has worked with many iconic characters/properties, including Wolverine, the Transformers, Batman and Spider-Man.
