New and experienced fans of the Professor Layton video game series don’t have to wait for Halloween to discover a wealth of eerie tricks and brain-teasing treats this season. Launching today for the Nintendo DS family of hand-held systems, the Professor Layton and the Last Specter game marks an extraordinary new chapter in the fan-favourite puzzle adventure franchise, featuring a prequel storyline that invites players to help the top-hatted professor solve his very first case. Professor Layton and the Last Specter features more puzzles than any previous series installment and a bonus role-playing game called Professor Layton’s London Life that lets fans immerse themselves in the Professor Layton universe like never before. This new game delivers hours upon hours of unique portable entertainment.

In Professor Layton and the Last Specter, distinguished scholar Hershel Layton has yet to become a world-famous master sleuth. Upon receiving a mysterious letter from an old friend, he travels to a rural town called Misthallery that’s said to be haunted by a nocturnal phantom. As players progress through the story by solving a wide variety of logic, slide, picture, number and language puzzles, they’ll also encounter Layton’s brainy assistant, Emmy Altava, and witness his first meeting with would-be apprentice Luke Triton. The game’s numerous puzzles intertwine with the storyline in clever ways and are suitable for all skill levels. Starting October 23, players can also download additional puzzles by connecting their Nintendo DS system to the Internet via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.

“The huge variety of puzzles in Professor Layton and the Last Specter make it not only entertaining but also a terrific value,” said Ron Bertram, Nintendo of Canada’s vice-president and general manager. “With a bonus role-playing game that takes the experience even deeper, players can get to know Professor Layton and his universe in a fun, interactive way.”

In the Professor Layton’s London Life role-playing game — which comes included on each Professor Layton and the Last Specter Game Card — players can experience life in Little London and mingle with quirky characters from throughout the Professor Layton game series. With more than 100 hours of game play and an additional storyline to complete, players can customize their appearance and surroundings, work odd jobs or collect clues to help uncover the origins of a mysterious fairy. Professor Layton’s London Life can be played anytime; it does not require players to complete the main game first.

Previous games in the Professor Layton series include Professor Layton and the Curious Village (2008), Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box (2009) and Professor Layton and the Unwound Future (2010). To date, more than 12 million Professor Layton games have been sold worldwide.

For nearly three decades, players around the globe have enjoyed the boundless fun and strategic thrills of the Tetris game. Now Nintendo is taking the iconic puzzle game to extraordinary new heights with Tetris: Axis, available exclusively for the hand-held Nintendo 3DS system at a suggested retail price of $29.99. With mind-expanding augmented-reality modes, more than 20 unique modes of play and a variety of multiplayer options, the game offers something new for everyone, whether you’re a Tetris veteran or just getting your first taste of this unique franchise.

Tetris: Axis combines traditional elements from the original Tetris game with new twists and features that showcase the unique capabilities of the portable Nintendo 3DS. The main goal is to maneuver and arrange falling blocks called Tetriminos to clear lines and boost your score. With two new augmented-reality modes in Tetris: Axis, the iconic puzzle action moves beyond the screen as players use AR Cards (included with the Nintendo 3DS system) to view game play in their own real-world environments. Other new modes include Fever, in which players must clear lines and activate special items in speedy 60-second rounds. Nintendo 3DS owners with wireless broadband Internet access can download new items for Fever mode via the system’s built-in SpotPass feature.

Tetris: Axis also offers nine party modes, including three that are new to the Tetris franchise. Local wireless modes allow up to eight players to enjoy Tetris: Axis simultaneously using only one Game Card (each player must have his or her own Nintendo 3DS system). By using Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection to compete with friends over broadband Internet, as many as eight players can dive into the action.

Now there’s a powerful new way to interact with the wild variety of monsters from the fan-favourite Dragon Quest video game series. Launching today for the Nintendo DS family of hand-held systems, Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 unleashes an epic adventure in which players can recruit, train and battle with imaginative monsters of all shapes and sizes. Better yet, players can create their own customized monsters by synthesizing two different ones and blending their unique traits and capabilities. With the built-in wireless features of Nintendo DS systems, it’s also simple and fun for users to connect with each other — locally and around the world — to share game data and engage in memorable monster battles together.

In Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2, players take on the role of a Monster Scout who has crash-landed on a mysterious island. To rescue missing passengers and members of the airship crew, they must assemble a strong team of monsters and fend off enemies in strategic turn-based battles. The game includes more than 300 monsters that can be recruited for battle and synthesized with other monsters to create new, more powerful ones. With more than 240 skill trees to choose from, players can customize their teams to prepare for all kinds of enemy encounters. Some monsters — including the iconic Slime — return from previous installments in the Dragon Quest series, while others are new.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 also supports a number of Tag Mode options that can be used to exchange game data with others. By connecting via Tag Mode to other Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 game owners, players can battle each other and scout their respective monsters. Players can also scout additional monsters by connecting with owners of the Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation or Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies games.
