News from the Shire
Ian Brodie and the team at Hobbiton Movie Set and Farm Tours will be giving us updates on what’s happening in their neck of the woods. We got the first update this week!

Another update on the work on the Bag End environment from Daniel Falconer
Weta has started work on a collectible environment of Bag End, Bilbo’s and subsequently Frodo’s home in Bagshot Row in the Shire. We haven’t seen much of Daniel recently and his update sheds some light on the reasons for that:

Work on the Bag End mini environment continues apace. One of the biggest tasks so far has in fact been the amassing of reference material. It’s surprising how little actually exists, and what does exist tends to be imagery from the same angles, but we’ve turned up some gems and found some interesting details we didn’t know about before. Approvals on the basic design have come from the studio and we’re deep into making the designs into a physical reality.

Miniature Pearce is here!
“Shiny” — was our test panel’s first reaction to the Pearce 75 Atom Ray Gun. And equally shiny is its minisculized counterpart. It is unique in that it has been miniaturised from a prototype. This is risky business, but who are we to argue with the scientists? At one quarter of its original scale, this finely detailed piece captures all the elaborate detail of its full scale counterpart and, like those larger guns, is made from metal. You simply MUST check it out here!

Richard Taylor’s and John Howe’s Forum Blitzes — check out the replies!
Both Richard Taylor and John Howe have recently been on the Weta Forum on The Shadow and Flame to answer questions from fans. Check out what they had to say. Richard Taylor here and John Howe here. And of course, there is plenty of opportunity to ask questions of other Weta crew, such as Daniel Falconer and David Tremont.

John Howe signs two new books at the Weta Cave
Tolkien and Fantasy illustrator and artist, John Howe, has two new books in the works, Fantasy Drawing Workshop and Lost Worlds by John Howe. John will be signing these books at an exclusive event at the Weta Cave in Wellington on Sunday 6 December. We’ll see you there!

Halo and Texas — what’s the connection? Now we know!
After our plea in the last newsletter, we had a few responses as to why more than half of the Halo Master Chief Sterling Silver Rings we’ve sold have gone to Texas. We reckon Deborah summed it up well:

I would say Texas is more of a state not afraid to stand up for what it believes in. And that means, if you’re a big businessman spending your days securing expensive contracts for your company, but you also like to kick back at night and play some Halo 3 with your friends, you’re not afraid to admit it! You would wear that Halo ring to work with pride, not afraid to fess-up to your geekdom.

Texas really does have a strong nerd base. And that nerd base is not just limited to the young crowd — people of all ages decide for themselves what they enjoy, not what people expect of them to enjoy or promote. There is a fairly broad spectrum of people who enjoy the Halo universe, as well as other games/movies/etc, and they aren’t afraid to proclaim it! Here you’re likely to find people just as proud of their vintage “Strongbad” t-shirt as you are somebody strutting around with their $3,000 handbag.

Tim Burton’s Tragic Technology: Cell Phone and Laptop Skins Available Today!

The next wave of Dark Horse Skins arrive featuring artwork from the legendary Tim Burton
The next wave of Dark Horse Skins arrive featuring artwork from the legendary Tim Burton

from Dark Horse Comics:

The popularity of skins that both personalize and protect our modern electronic devices is growing by leaps and bounds. Dark Horse Deluxe, an imprint of Dark Horse Comics, and manufacturer GelaSkins have teamed up to launch a new collection of special designs for this contemporary platform, drawing on their longtime relationships with some of today’s most interesting and respected creative talents. Dark Horse is pleased to announce that the first designs featuring the original art and characters of director and artist Tim Burton are available now.

Burton’s career-spanning retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York opens November 22, 2009, and will continue through April 2010. Consisting of a gallery exhibition and a film series, the event will showcase Burton’s widespread influence on both artists and pop culture.

Dark Horse Deluxe has a long-standing licensing relationship with Tim Burton for his most personal work, the fascinating group of characters created for his book The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy and Other Stories. The art and story have inspired a range of figures, toys, journals, and other collectibles that bring the characters alive and have been dubbed the Tragic Toys for Girls and Boys.

The new products take the technological tools that are now ubiquitous — laptops, computers, cell phones, and related other electronics — and turn them into a hip palette for personal expression while serving the useful function of protecting them from wear and tear.

“We have been planning this new platform for some time,” Dark Horse vice president of sales, marketing, and licensing Anita Nelson remarked. “We are proud to have Tim Burton’s strange and wonderful characters as the centerpiece. We are so pleased he likes the designs and think fans will agree.”

The complete Dark Horse line of Tim Burton GelaSkins can be seen here.

All are available for purchase now!

Christmas Memorandum from Dr. Grordbort

from Weta:

TO ALL STAFF!

Memorandum on Christmas Celebrations

It has been brought to the attention of the SGCC (Seasonal Glee and Contentment Committee) that not all Grordbort Industries employees intend to be jolly this season. Whether this is due to lack of imagination or just plain ignorance we do not know, but we have today had our 8 step plan ratified by the board of Governors and intend to ensure you are happy whether you like it or not!

  1. VICTORY is nigh! Launching this week with TWO book signings at the Weta Cave! Attendance compulsory for all staff below pay grade 14C.
  2. The annual visit to the Royal Observatron at Greenwich has been replaced by a bare-knuckle boxing event at the Salvation Army in Lewisham. Mr. Slithers will keep a book on the event.
  3. The shiny and therefore desirable Pearce 75 — Miniature Version has, through a most regrettable event involving a large grey squirrel and a Daimler crank shaft, unexpectedly started shipping! Not that we pay you nearly enough to be able to afford such beauty, but you can always gawk.
  4. The results are in from our recent survey! We are pleased to announce that 74% of our respondents harbour more than a little resentment towards that sickly pale orb in the night sky and we would therefore like to announce the immediate commencement of Operation Lunatic.
  5. The Righteous Bison is smashing particles world wide but has yet to put a single dent in anyone’s wallet! Extraordinary! It truly is a marvel of modern engineering and all staff in the Imitation Metal department (the light infantry) get an extra tuppence in their bonus envelopes.
  6. Dr. Grordbort’s Art Book, signed by Arch-nerd Emeritus Greg Broadmore, is still available, but only just! Please note our Squalor Circumvention Detail will undoubtedly inspect your premises prior to delivery.
  7. Our art exhibition in Oamaru (Venusian plains) has had a splendid reception. You are required to attend on three separate occasions and to bloody enjoy every single minute of it. The natives seem to!
  8. Those who, after all this, still aren’t laughing can take their attitude down to Field Test Volunteer Services.

Don’t say we don’t bring you a
Merry Christmas

Lumina Jumps from the Little Screen to the Big Screen at the Clockenflap Music & Multi-Media Arts Festival

Lumina Poster

from Lumina:

Hong Kong’s original fantasy web series Lumina jumps from the little screen to the big screen at this past weekend’s Clockenflap Music & Multi-Media Arts Festival held at Hong Kong’s Cyberport. An estimated 3,500 festival attendees had the opportunity to view the Saturday and Sunday screenings of the first Lumina webisode, which to date has been available exclusively online.

“Clockenflap is a huge supporter of local artists and filmmakers and it’s great to see the bar being raised on independent production here year after year,” says Lindsay Robertson, Film Programmer, Clockenflap. “The film tent has grown enormously since last year’s festival — with 80 films screened this year — and we were thrilled to be screening such a diverse range of quality content from Hong Kong as well as from around the world. Screening films as part of a music festival environment allows a wider demographic to watch films they may not otherwise get to see.”

“It’s an honor to be invited to the Clockenflap festival and to be part of this exciting time in Hong Kong indie cinema,” says Lumina writer/director Jennifer Thym. “We’re excited about expanding our audience worldwide.” With over 30,000 views online from word of mouth and grassroots marketing, Lumina’s viewership is growing strong, especially with the young female set. In the last month, 30% of all Lumina viewers on YouTube were females between the ages of 13 and 17; the next largest demographic (15%) were males between the ages of 25 and 34.

The entire nine part first season of Lumina is now available to view on luminaseries.com as well as on Lumina’s American distribution partner’s website, koldcast.tv. A special DVD release with behind the scenes footage and bonus material is on the way.

About Lumina the Web Series:

Written and directed by first time Asian American director Jennifer Thym, Lumina the Web Series is a dark densely woven fantasy series set against the sparkling backdrop of Hong Kong. Lumina stars actress and model JuJu Chan, who also starred in the recent RTHK reality show on poverty and is the winner of Miss United Nation International Ambassador 2009, Miss United Nation China, Miss Congeniality and Miss TVB People’s Choice for Miss Chinatown USA Pageant 2009. Michael Chan, star of the viral hit Wall Street Fighter IV, and Vince Matthew Chung, winner of The Amazing Race Asia 3, co-star.

The series features music from around the world, including songs from groundbreaking music collective The Enigmatic Army, American college circuit favorite Tim Be Told and China Global Battle of the Bands winner Killer Soap. “Good music is integral to drawing viewers into the story, and I’m honored to have collaborated with such talented musicians,” says Jennifer Thym.

Lumina the Web Series is signed for distribution by American Web TV Channel KoldCast TV to join their award-winning slate of original online content.

About the Clockenflap Music & Multi-Media Arts Festival:

Clockenflap is a pioneering outdoor music and multimedia arts festival held over two days with over 3,500 attendees. It is currently the largest outdoor music and arts festival in Hong Kong. The festival provides a platform for both internationally and locally sourced live music, film, installation art, digital arts and animation, brought together as a great weekend out for all ages. The Clockenflap festival aims to support local artists by providing a large-scale event to showcase their talent, and to inspire others to become active through exposure to high quality international and local artists. It is the organisers’ view that a thriving art scene, across varied media, is critical for the social well-being of a large city. In addition, Clockenflap actively pursues the objective of making a profit with a view to nurturing the festival in Hong Kong and expanding the event into neighboring cities throughout the region.

VIZ Pictures to Release “20th Century Boys 1: Beginning of the End”

20th Century Boys 1: Beginning of the End

from VIZ Pictures:

VIZ Pictures, an affiliate of VIZ Media, LLC that focuses on Japanese live-action film distribution, will release the science fiction feature 20th Century Boys 1: Beginning of the End on DVD on December 15th in the United States through its distributor, VIZ Media. 20th Century Boys will carry an MSRP of $24.92 US / $35.99 CAN.

The 20th Century Boys saga was directed by Yukihiko Tsutsumi (who also directed the live-action film, Happily Ever After which is also available from VIZ Pictures) and is based on a popular manga series by Naoki Urasawa. It all begins in 1969 when a young boy named Kenji and his friends write “The Book of Prophecy” in which they write about a future where they fight against an evil organization trying to take over the world and bring about doomsday. Years later in 1997, a mysterious cult being led by a man only known as “Friend” emerges and begins to gain strong influence over society. A series of catastrophic events begin to occur mirroring the prophecies made up by the young Kenji and the greatest fear is the climax of “The Book” becoming a reality; December 31st, 2000, a terrifying giant virus-spreading robot will attack the entire city of Tokyo leading to the end of mankind. The only people who know about “The Book” are Kenji and his childhood friends. Who is “Friend”? Will Kenji and his friends be able to save mankind and live to see the 21st Century?

20th Century Boys mesmerized audiences at its U.S. theatrical premiere in San Francisco this past summer and we’re very proud to announce its North American debut on DVD,” says Seiji Horibuchi, President and CEO of VIZ Pictures. “Naoki Urasawa’s multi-layered story of childhood mystical prophecy, government conspiracies and alien invasion is given a lavish production treatment and the film’s ending is a real cliffhanger that’s also very different from the original manga series. We look forward to introducing audiences to this exciting 3-part science fiction saga!”

VIZ Pictures has scheduled theatrical screenings of 20th Century Boys 1 in December at VIZ Cinema, the nation’s first theatre venue devoted exclusively to Japanese film operated by VIZ Pictures, Inc. On December 10th, starting at 7:30pm, VIZ Pictures has a special event to celebrate the DVD release of the first chapter of the trilogy. Tickets are $25.00, which includes a pass to the film screening, the brand new DVD, a poster, and more! VIZ Cinema is located inside NEW PEOPLE, a newly opened entertainment destination in the heart of San Francisco’s Japantown offering the latest examples of Japanese popular culture. Tickets are available at vizcinema.com or can be purchased at the theatre box-office. For more information about this event, please visit vizcinema.com or viz-pictures.com.

Dragon Wars gets housebroken! Plus, Plan 9 Encore this week!

from RiffTrax:

When we heard that Korean studio Younggu-Art Movies was making a picture called Dragon Wars, we were both excited and disgusted at the same time. Excited because we have had many conversations about which Korean movie studio would direct our “dream” dragon movie, and the name Younggu-Art Movies just kept coming up. But we were also disgusted, because the movie title failed to provide its own abbreviation as part of the title.

This is a major gripe that we have with just about every single movie that has ever come out: Abbreviations of a movie’s title should always be included as part of the title. In today’s busy web 2.0 world, who has time to refer to anything by its whole name? However, we run into trouble when movies don’t specify how we should abbreviate their titles, and competing, non-standard abbreviations are adopted. Fortunately, our disgust was misguided, as Dragon Wars bucks the trend and includes its own abbreviation in the title: D-War. A true abbreviation, where Dragon becomes D and Wars becomes War, Dragon Wars: D-War provides the consumer with something so sorely missing from movie titles today: Choice.

So whether you choose to experience the fantastical creatures and hi-octane action sequences of Dragon Wars, or prefer the ancient story of a love that knows no bounds of D-War, you must know one thing: this D-movie D-bites D-hard.

Mike, Kevin and Bill decided to D-riff Dragon Wars: D-War, because a fan in attendance at our 2009 Comic-Con panel suggested it. The moral of the story? Don’t do that.

Get it here.

And don’t forget! This week is the RiffTrax Live Encore of Plan 9! Get tickets and showtimes here.
