BOOM! Studios Presents the Classic “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” as a Graphic Novel

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

Philip K. Dick was known for his bizarre take on the future, his paranoid and delusional characters and strange, unexpected twists. While other authors were churning out utopian futures based on scientific advancements that improved the human condition, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? painted a future of rot and decay where the Earth is a slum that normal people want to escape from physically, while the genetically-challenged escape in their minds. Moods are dialed up and served like noodles or rice — any way you like it. Animals are rare, many extinct, and it’s become an obligation to care for them, your duty as a human. The world’s gods have been replaced by Mercer, a man whose struggles you can tune into virtually and find your humanity in the Unity of the struggle. Androids that have replaced human workers in the off-world colonies have become so life-like, you wouldn’t know if the guy next to you was a human or an “andy”.

Enter Rick Dekard, bounty hunter. His job is to find and “retire” andies who have escaped their masters and fled back to Earth to hide. With the lead bounty hunter in his area laid up in the hospital after a hunt went wrong, Dekard finds himself with the task of tracking down and retiring six andies.

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? is considered to be PKD at his best. It was the basis for the film Blade Runner, which for many was an introduction to PKD’s work. (Other film adaptations of PKD’s work include Next, Total Recall, Minority Report and Paycheck). In BOOM! Studios’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? they’ve chosen to celebrate the brilliance of the original story by illustrating it and including the full, unaltered text of the original novel. Blade Runner has been celebrated over and over again with re-masters, re-edits and director’s cuts. It’s about time Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? gets its turn.

A blend of traditional and digital illustrations, each issue has three alternate covers for the enthusiasts who want to try to collect them all, and has more than thirty high-quality pages. Each issue also includes backmatter, commentary included in the final pages by various authors who were greatly influenced by PKD’s work. The heavy pages are inked from edge to edge and are absolutely gorgeous. The price tag of $3.99 is a bargain considering how much you get and what you find between the covers.

Tony Parker’s artwork tells the story just as surely as PKD’s words do, and the colors by BLOND give the world and the characters depth and dimension. The contrast between light and shadow is as dramatic as the muted and glowing colors that spill across the pages. The illustrations are so rich and every frame seems photo-like. No busy or blank backgrounds here. Everything is well-balanced and compliments PKD’s story. In the first issue, there were a few pixelated images that may or may not have been intentional, but with the exception of that, these images are sharp and impressive.

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? will be released as a 24-part maxi series, the first three issues of which are currently available from BOOM! Studios or your local comic shop. Regardless of whether you are a comic book collector, a fan of the film Blade Runner, or a Philip K. Dick fanatic like me, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? is definitely worth adding to your collection.

Hong Kong’s “DevaShard” Graphic Novel Set for the Big Screen

Vanouish

from Vanouish Motion Pictures:

The highly anticipated fantasy/epic graphic novel series DevaShard is slicing its way to the silver screen.

Vanquish Motion Pictures and its toppers Jay Douglas and Nav Gupta won out a long and fierce bidding war that ignited after Hong Kong-based Fluid Comics debuted the novel at San Diego’s Comic-Con.

Moving quickly on the property, Douglas and Gupta will produce and co-write the script with pen pal Heather Kenealy, from a screen treatment by Kevin Grevioux, co-creator of the Underworld franchise, who has just been tapped to adapt the 25 issue book, as well as executive produce.

The epic tale of DevaShard, inspired by Asian mythology and crafted by Fluid Comic’s Zen, Keith Burns and Johnny Tam, centers on two forsaken sons, one born of darkness, the other of light, struggling to find their place in a grim world riddled with corrupt kingdoms, cursed demons and terrifying magic. The DevaShard series is published by Fluid Comics seniors Simon Squibb and Helen Griffiths and has been met with rave reviews since its Asia release.

“The densely diverse world and characters which DevaShard possesses is just too damn cool not to be seen on screen,” said Douglas.

“Not only is the cover art by Frank Cho and Simon Bisley amazing, but the book’s stylized visuals and east-meets-west flare are seriously insane,” Gupta added.

Currently, Douglas and Gupta are also producing the globe-trotting video game adventure franchise Broken Sword with Radar Pictures while Grevioux is hot off setting up his own comic book creations, The Pale Horseman and I, Frankenstein.

VIZ Media Releases the Teenage Ninja Action Adventure of “Naruto: Shippuden: the Movie” on DVD This Fall

from VIZ Media:

VIZ Media, LLC (VIZ Media), one of the entertainment industry’s most innovative and comprehensive publishing, animation and licensing companies, has announced the DVD release of Naruto: Shippuden: the Movie on November 10th. The new film is the fourth in the Naruto movie series, is rated “‘T+” for Older Teens, and will have an MSRP of $24.92 U.S. / $35.99 CAN.

In the newest animated feature film adventure, a powerful spirit that once threatened to destroy the world is back! Naruto’s mission is to protect a priestess named Shion, who is the only one with the power to seal away the monster. She also has the uncanny ability to predict someone’s fate. Her latest prediction: Naruto will soon die. Naruto’s only hope is to abandon Shion, but that’s not Naruto’s style. He decides to face her fatal prediction head-on — and die!

“The Naruto: Shippuden story arc is largely about growing up and as the world’s most popular ninja grows into adolescence, so have millions of his fans,” says Brian Ige, VIZ Media Director of Sales, Home Entertainment. “Naruto’s missions have become even more dangerous, and even fate will test Naruto’s skills and self confidence in this latest adventure as a mysterious princess foretells his death. We invite fans to check out all the action in this new feature film this fall!”

The Naruto: Shippuden manga and animated series pick up two years after Naruto left to train with his teacher and mentor Jiraiya. Now a teenager, the stories in the new series take a more mature and sometimes darker approach as Naruto returns to the Hidden Leaf Village to reunite with his old friends and discovers they are stronger than before — and maybe even stronger than he is! For Naruto, the spirit of a nine-tailed fox spirit trapped inside him is a metaphor for adolescence. There is a powerful force in this spunky teenager and he must learn to conquer it and overcome his own uncontrollable spirit and emotions while battling an array of villains and completing near-impossible missions.

Created by Masashi Kishimoto, Naruto was first introduced in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in Japan in 1999 and quickly became that country’s most popular ninja manga targeting tweens and teens and has sold more than 92 million copies to-date. The manga series (rated “T” for Teens) and animated counterpart (Naruto rated “T” for teens, and Naruto: Shippuden rated “T+” for older teens) are some of VIZ Media’s most successful properties and have captivated millions of fans across North America, Europe and South America. Naruto is a co-production of TV TOKYO, VIZ Media parent company Shueisha Inc., and Pierrot Co., Ltd.

For more information on Naruto: Shippuden, and to view Naruto: Shippuden episodes (subtitled) please visit the official Naruto website at naruto.com. In addition, DTO (dubbed) is also available on iTunes. Classic Naruto episodes can be viewed on hulu.com, Playstation Network, Xbox Live, Amazon VOD and iTunes.

Victory — Pre-order yours now! The follow-up volume to Dr. Grordbort’s Contrapulatronic Dingus Directory

Pre-order directly from Weta and get an Art Card signed by Greg Broadmore. The year’s foremost journal of progressive armaments and weaponry! Behold the latest line of defense captured in action! The second book to emerge from the printshop at Grordbort Industries, Victory follows in the footsteps of the trans-galactically successful Dr. Grordbort’s Contrapulatronic Dingus Directory that was released last year. Filled to the brim with first hand tales of exploration and progress from the great heroes of our time, picture strips of unimaginable escapades on the frontier, never-seen-before portraits of dazzling damsels and monstrous villains, and laudable accounts of man and robot pitted against our greatest enemy (the uncivilized world), Victory is an onslaught of action-packed scientific adventure in full-spectrum color — containing facts that every boy and literate girl should know. A tongue-in-cheek look at the sometimes absurd realities of the British aristocracy of past eras. Written and illustrated by Weta Workshop Conceptual Designer Greg Broadmore, this book sumptuously details a science-fiction history that never was. Hearkening back to the classic sci-fi serials of yesteryear, it reveals the backstories and mythos of Weta Limited’s highly limited ray gun collectible line. This gorgeous 64 page full-colour hardcover will be shipping mid-November. Preview and pre-order yours here!

Fireworks frolics at the Tremontium foundry!
As you may have heard, the imitation metal devised for The Righteous Bison has caused some confusion at Dr. Grordbort’s heavy metal facility at Nether Wallop. These compounds are so similar to the naked eye, that a tub-full of the new-fangled resin made it into the furnace and caused severe breathing difficulties (you try inhaling an ignited liquid) with the 300 staff that witnessed the spectacle. Luckily, bottom-rung untrained nit-wits are easy to come by, so the workforce has already been replaced. Funerals (for those who care) are to be held on Tuesday week at the Chapel at Bishops Itchington.

Dr. Grordbort’s Infallible Forum Still Infallible!

Bibliophibian Shirt

You’ve got too many books. They crowd the shelves two or three deep, sideways or stacked any way they’ll fit; they pile on tables waiting to be read, re-read, or simply kept forever. It’s gotten to the point where they’ve started to multiply when you’re not watching — there’s definitely more today than yesterday. And it’ll keep on like this, until there’s nothing at all left but books, books, and more books. How glorious.

Others don’t understand, but you — you breathe the stuff. You inhale paper and exhale ink; you live between pages, and your habitat is the written word. For you are a bibliophibian.

The Second Dr Grordbort’s book is near!
In a few weeks we’ll be starting to take pre-orders for Greg Broadmore’s second book: Victory! Scientific Adventure Violence for Young Men and Literate Women. As politically correct as ever, Greg has this time written an Adventure Annual, designed to teach the younger generation all about conquering the Universe and those who inhabit it. It follows the style of Dr. Grordbort’s Contrapulatronic Dingus Directory that was released last year. We let a few of our friends have a preview — this is what one of them says:

“I utterly love this universe Greg has created. Join Lord Cockswain as he selflessly ventures out into our solar system in the name of science, and discovery. Watch in awe as he uses his fantastic guns to research all of the wondrous life he encounters! And while he’s at it, teach those filthy savages a thing or two. This satirical take on the colonial era and the astonishing and fully complete world that Greg has created leaves the reader engulfed in an overload of creatures, weapons, locations and characters that are truly fantastic. Drawing from both twenties and thirties fiction, while simultaneously mocking it, the end result is pure gold. Propaganda posters, ray guns and tanks, what more could you ask for?”
Neill Blomkamp, Director — District 9

Customers who buy the book directly from Weta’s website or at the Weta Cave, get an exclusive Art Card, signed by Greg Broadmore. Check out a preview of some of the pages in the book.
