An All-New Episode Highlights New Character Models for the Heroes of “Star Wars: The Clone Wars”

from StarWars.com:

When Padmé Amidala and Ahsoka Tano travel in secret to Raxus to forge a peace agreement with the Separatists, Ahsoka must confront her own prejudices and preconceptions when she comes face to face with the enemy. She will learn that there are “Heroes on Both Sides” in an all-new episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars — airing at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT Friday, November 19 on Cartoon Network.

In addition to exploring some of the complexities of the war itself, the episode is notable because it introduces all-new character models for some of The Clone Wars’ heroes — including Obi-Wan, Anakin and Ahsoka.

“Over the course of the series so far, our characters have been affected by the conflict, so the changes we are seeing are a reflection of what they’ve gone through and how they’ve changed,” says Supervising Director Dave Filoni. “We’re getting closer to the events of Episode III, and the look of the series is moving toward that look and those designs. We don’t have a live-action point of comparison for Ahsoka, but her development is definitely as pronounced as anyone’s. When the war began, she was just a kid; she was strong and capable, but she had a lot to learn — and she’s been through a lot. She’s been changed by the things she’s seen and done, and now we’re seeing that reflected in her look. She’s older, more mature. In this episode, we see a significant step for her emotional development, in addition to her aesthetic development. Coming face to face with the enemy is going to be an eye-opening experience for her.”

In addition to showcasing the series’ character development and its progression toward the Episode III aesthetics, the new CG models also reflect a change in the way that The Clone Wars is produced.

“Our production keeps getting better; as we move forward, we’re able to incorporate new techniques and improved animation,” says Filoni. “As a weekly series, we’ve been pushing ourselves to do things that haven’t been done in TV animation, and it’s always a struggle just to get it done at all. But we are learning tricks that help to streamline the process, and we continue to build our asset library. We’re at a place where we can explore and develop new and improved character assets for some of our primary players. In addition to the look change, these new models are so much more expressive.”

Be a Laughbender! RiffTrax’s riff of “The Last Airbender” is now available!

from RiffTrax:

A lot of bad things have come “from the mind of M. Night Shyamalan,” but we feel it’s safe to say that this one came straight from his colon. What is there to say about The Last Airbender that isn’t already said by its Rotten Tomatoes rating of 6%? A whole lot, as it turns out. It’s becoming apparent that the true genius of M. Night is finding a way to make the wrong creative decision at any given moment. Dialogue, casting, music cues, every choice in the film suggests that the once-acclaimed director has given up Alfred Hitchcock as his inspiration, and replaced him with a certain T. Wiseau. And, frankly, we couldn’t be happier. But, Mr. Shyamalan: we worked with Tommy Wiseau, we know Tommy Wiseau, and you, sir, are no Tommy Wiseau.

Pandora’s Box Set – “Avatar” DVD Contest!

from GeekChicDaily:

James Cameron really, really likes things that are long and blue. And by “things” we mean movies. (What did you think we meant?) Avatar, which extended Cameron’s cerulean obsession by starring giant Smurfin’ cat-people, already saw a theatrical re-release with 8 new minutes. The new DVD and Blu-ray sets feature the extended and theatrical cuts, plus a newer version that’s 8 minutes longer – just the thing to keep you up all night. Want’em all? Sign up to win your own Avatar Blu-ray or DVD 3-disc set from GCD!

Additional scenes include a new prologue on an overcrowded Earth, and a subplot about Neytiri’s sister (which prompts Jake to make a threesome joke not unlike the one you just made in your head). Not enough new stuff? There’s also 45 minutes of justifiably deleted scenes: Jake takes a psychedelic trip! Norm and Trudy get busy! Metaphors get overly explained! (In the spirit of extended cuts see GCD’s extended Avatar 3-disc set review.)

A documentary goes into every detail you want to know about the movie, while another follows Cameron’s journey to the Amazon to protest a rainforest dam (kind of a bummer, that one). The Blu-Ray set has even more features, from the original “scriptment” to a full-on English-Na’vi dictionary. All that’s missing is 3-D… but smack yourself in the face hard enough, and you might be able to approximate that too. Remember, we’re giving these away (DVDs, not smacks to the head) so click here for your chance to Sully your hands!

National Geographic presents “Indiana Jones and the Adventure of Archaeology: The Exhibition”

from Lucasfilm:

For the past thirty years, audiences around the world have followed Indiana Jones on his quests for treasure, adventure, fortune and glory. And now, Indiana Jones and the Adventure of Archaeology, a redefined modern exhibition experience, is coming to a museum near you. This innovative exhibition, made possible by Lucasfilm Ltd., presented by the National Geographic Society and produced by Montreal’s X3 Productions, will feature fascinating artefacts from the National Geographic Society and the Penn Museum, along with an extensive collection of Indiana Jones film materials from the Lucasfilm Archives. This first-of-its kind touring exhibition will be presented in twelve world-class institutions in Canada, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. The world premiere run will be held at the Montreal Science Centre, starting April 28, 2011.

Kyra Bowling, Exhibits Manager at Lucasfilm Ltd., is pleased to see that “Dr. Jones has found his way to the museum and accompanies visitors on their very own adventure into the science of field archaeology.” Bowling adds, “The Indiana Jones films have entertained generations of audiences and this exhibition provides a wonderful way to merge that on-screen excitement with the science of archaeology to help inspire learning in a fun, dynamic way.”

Indiana Jones and the Adventure of Archaeology not only features a vast and exclusive collection of Indy props, models, concept art and set designs, it also presents a wealth of historical and cultural facts. The internationally renowned University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, otherwise known as the Penn Museum, is providing genuine archaeological artefacts and educational material. The National Geographic Society, the exhibition’s global presenting partner, also shares artefacts, photos, videos and content from its impressive and historic archive.

“This exhibition is an exciting journey into the real world of archaeology,” says Fredrik Hiebert, National Geographic’s Archaeology Fellow. “This is the perfect opportunity to introduce audiences of all ages to this fascinating scientific field through the inspiration of these highly popular films. It is a natural for National Geographic.”

Indiana Jones and the Adventure of Archaeology transforms the museum experience into a multimedia and interactive adventure. Visitors will be immersed in the world of Indiana Jones, an environment created by state-of-the-art technology and spanning over 1,000 square metres. Equipped with a video companion, visitors will embark on a quest to uncover the true origins of archaeological mysteries. Charged with comprehensive educational content, photos and videos, the interactive hand-held devices will guide visitors on the “Indy Trail” and through the various archaeological zones. Visitors will also have the ability to create their own adventure with an interactive quest.

Indiana Jones and the Adventure of Archaeology will elucidate myths associated with relics like the Ark of the Covenant and the Holy Grail and explore mythical places such as Akator or Mayapore. The exhibition also will shed light on how archaeologists really work on projects such as deciphering ancient scripts and discovering the true origins of the mysterious Nasca lines in southern Peru. With Indiana Jones and the Adventure of Archaeology, visitors will discover where fact meets fiction.

A Team of Experts
In order to create a new kind of museum experience, one that will engage, educate and entertain visitors in innovative ways, X3 Productions has not only put its creative expertise to work, it has also gathered a team of world-renowned specialists. With their recognized knowledge in academic and field archaeology Drs. Michel Fortin and Fredrik Hiebert have helped to create and develop the exhibition’s educational content. With a specialty in Near Eastern archaeology, Fortin is a Full Professor of Archaeology who has been teaching in the Department of History at Université Laval in Quebec City for nearly three decades. He has led numerous excavation teams in the Middle East and is a true ambassador to his profession. A world-renowned archaeologist and National Geographic Fellow, Hiebert is a field expert who has searched for human history in some of the world’s most remote and exotic places. His experience in both North and South America and across Asia is ideal for this project. The team is further supported by Shirley Reiff Howarth, director of the Humanities Exchange in Montreal, whose expertise in travelling exhibitions and museum curation has proven to be a great asset in the development of this project.

Archaeology and Local Treasures
Indiana Jones and the Adventure of Archaeology sets the wheels in motion not only to inspire, but most importantly to cultivate a lasting interest in archaeology. The world abounds with treasures, some of which can be found in our own backyard. The exhibition is designed in such a way that the last gallery is dedicated to local archaeology, allowing the host museum to feature some of its prized collections. For its world premiere in Montreal, artefacts from the Archaeology Collection of the City of Montreal will be on display.

C-3PO and R2-D2 Get An Adventure of Their Own in an All-New Episode of “Star Wars: The Clone Wars”!

from StarWars.com:

In the middle of a routine shopping trip on Coruscant, C-3PO is abducted by bounty hunter Cad Bane. Soon, both Threepio and his astromech counterpart R2-D2 find themselves pawns in Bane’s plan to free Ziro the Hutt from a heavily guarded prison in the heart of the Republic. The hapless droids are once again integral in events that threaten to unravel the future of the galaxy in “Evil Plans” — an all-new episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars airing at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT Friday, November 5th on Cartoon Network.

Reprising his role from all six live-action Star Wars films and countless ancillary intergalactic appearances over the past three decades, Anthony Daniels returns to voice the prim and proper protocol droid for this special episode of The Clone Wars. Thrilled at the rare chance to explore Threepio’s expertise in etiquette, Daniels himself relished the opportunity to exercise the fan-favorite character’s strengths in ways that haven’t yet been seen on screen.

“Threepio’s whole life is focused on how to avoid conflict, and the basic premise is that he’s always out of place. But he doesn’t have to be the fall guy all the time,” says Daniels. “For once, we see him functioning as he was made, according to his programming. It’s a more domesticated storyline, without the shoot-em-up aspects of the Saga. His abilities are cerebral, not physical — and he finally gets to use his expertise in protocol and etiquette. In a way, he’s more relaxed than we’ve ever seen him. But of course nothing in party-planning ever goes exactly as planned.”

Having spent so much time ensconced in Threepio’s golden trappings for the big screen, live-action adventures, Daniels enjoys the opportunity to bring the character to life through vocalization alone. Less physically strenuous than on-camera appearances, voice work nonetheless requires a keen attention to detail, as well as an understanding of what makes the character tick.

“There are all sorts of funny little technical issues with keeping him human-like without human sounds. He doesn’t breathe; I have to be careful not to breathe,” says Daniels. “The aim is to keep him very much as he is in the movies. Some of it has become second nature; I’ve been pleased to realize that I can still create the voice and match the original character. It’s the genuine article. And I really do enjoy the animation. It’s a mutual support society; they do picture to voice, so it’s a physical representation based around my vocal performance. In the series, Threepio is as gravity-forced as always. It reminds you that he can be quite clumsy. I think The Clone Wars is animated in a way that is quite accessible — not just the wide-eyed, simple, Saturday morning fare. It makes you realize you are watching Star Wars.”

Though the episode is quintessentially Star Wars, Daniels notes that the droids tend to illustrate some of the lighter aspects of the space saga. Focusing on dialogue rather than danger, they represent the fun of the series, without relying so heavily on galaxy-shattering stakes.

“There are sides of Star Wars that can be quite humorous — subtle and more gentle. I think that’s why people enjoy the relationship between Artoo and Threepio,” he says. “You don’t expect them to exhibit these human qualities, and it’s really quite charming. For all the battles, there’s a benignity that gives [Star Wars] the winner’s cup; it’s an honorable enterprise, because there’s more to it than blasters and political concerns. It’s important to realize that not everything has to focus on the dark side. Life goes on, even when there’s a war going on. But Threepio would say that, wouldn’t he?”

WIN “The Art of District 9”! For Humans Only.

from GeekChicDaily:

You’ve already seen District 9 so many times you know every detail like the back of your steadily mutating hand. Or at least, you thought you did.

Do you know what was on top of the alien spacecraft? If the prawns really were a worker class, what did their leaders look like? And why did they decorate their bodies with garbage? You can enjoy the movie without knowing. But you won’t get the whole story without The Art Of District 9, from Peter Jackson’s Weta Workshop. So far, the book is only available from Weta’s website. But we’re giving one away now, WAY before the book’s general release on December 21st, 2010!

There’s more to The Art of District 9 than meets the compound eye that’s busting through your face. It has been nearly a year since the movie left theaters, hit DVD, and was nominated for an Oscar. This has given the folks at Weta plenty of time to fully open their archives. The book covers everything from concept designs to alternate takes on the material in exacting detail. If there’s ever a sequel, many clues as to what it might involve are contained within.

So don’t delay — enter our contest right now. But be warned: if any non-humans are caught entering, we’re calling the MNU on your insectoid butt.

Trick or Treat – Indie Filmmakers Tackle Monstrous Task of 3D Animation

from FranknSon:

FranknSon (FranknSon.com) is a feature-length, 3D animation that has just entered development and will go into production next year. FranknSon tells the story of a young monster in search of a family. It’s a tale that will appeal to both kids and adults; as it draws upon the legendary Monsters from the golden age. It is about a forgotten group of Monsters that gets a second chance and a village that needs redemption. It’s a timeless story of love and family, of friendship and loyalty. Apart from great characters, it has a wonderful screenplay. There are elements of the best “buddy movies” with a touch of The Magnificent Seven/Seven Samurai meets FranknSon. In Franknson there are heroes we can really care for in the best traditions of Disney, Pixar, or Dreamworks.

Why would an indie group choose to make a 3-D monster animation?

Two reasons — If you look at the top-50 grossing domestic films in the United States, you will find that 40-plus of them were in the fantasy, science fiction, animation, and horror/terror genres. With evolving stereoscopic 3-D tools and a great script in hand, a compelling business case can be made for this kind of production.

The second reason is that it is hard to do, that is, the competition in these genres for high quality films is low. There are only a handful of big studios that can take on a full 3-D feature animation. Most Indie filmmakers believe they don’t have the financing or expertise to pull off high-quality 3-D stereoscopic animation or VFX productions. Yet we all know that the best talent in the industry comes up the indie route, but they all assume their polished upscale project will have to wait until they make it to “Hollywood” — we think this is a false assumption. We need to step up to the Hollywood challenge and prove that Indie filmmakers can create world-class 3-D animations and VFX.

We also all know that independent film productions are still measured against Hollywood big-budget productions. As unfair as this seems, an audience does not care if a producer had only $7,000, $70,000, or millions of dollars to make a movie, it will be compared to a $70-million plus Hollywood production. The digital revolution now allows us to level the playing field, and we intend to do just that.

So who are we? We are a group of artists who have come together to make a monster of a movie. We are defying the odds and making a Pixar-style feature on an Indie budget. More at FranknSon.com.
