Blizzard Entertainment and Legendary Pictures Sign Sam Raimi to Direct Upcoming Warcraft Movie

World of Warcraft Logo

from Blizzard Entertainment:

Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. and Legendary Pictures announced today that Sam Raimi has signed on to direct the eagerly-anticipated major motion picture based on Blizzard Entertainment’s award-winning Warcraft universe. Raimi has, in the course of his career, clearly demonstrated a genius for developing and adapting existing fictional universes for mainstream audiences while staying true to the spirit of the original content.

Raimi directed the Spider-Man trilogy, which has broken box-office records around the world and garnered five Academy Award nominations. Known for his imaginative filmmaking style, richly drawn characters and offbeat humor, Raimi wrote and directed the cult classic, The Evil Dead and produced 30 Days of Night. He most recently wrote and directed the supernatural thriller, Drag Me to Hell.

“At its core, Warcraft is a fantastic, action-packed story,” said Raimi. “I am thrilled to work with such a dynamite production team to bring this project to the big screen.”

Charles Roven’s producing talents were recently seen with last summer’s blockbuster The Dark Knight, which grossed in excess of $1 billion, was nominated for eight Academy Awards and won two. His body of work also includes the widely acclaimed Batman Begins and the sci-fi classic 12 Monkeys. Roven, with Atlas producing partner Alex Gartner, will be producing with Legendary Pictures CEO Thomas Tull, Legendary’s Chief Creative Officer Jon Jashni, Raimi and Raimi’s producing partner Joshua Donen. Raimi’s partner, Robert Tapert, will be an Executive Producer and Blizzard Entertainment’s Senior Vice President of Creative Development, Chris Metzen, a Co-Producer.

“Partnering with Sam Raimi exemplifies Legendary’s mandate of marrying the highest quality intellectual property to world-class filmmakers,” said Legendary’s Tull. “Sam’s passion for ‘Warcraft’ is undeniable and we know that he will create an incredible film worthy of Blizzard’s phenomenal franchise. We look forward to collaborating with our partners at Warner Bros. and continuing our successful relationship with Chuck in bringing this rich new world to the screen.”

“Blizzard Entertainment and Legendary Pictures have a shared vision for this film and we searched at length to find the very best director to bring that vision to life,” said Paul Sams, chief operating officer of Blizzard Entertainment. “From our first conversation with Sam, we could tell he was the perfect choice. Sam knows how to simultaneously satisfy the enthusiasts and the mainstream audience that might be experiencing that content for the first time. We’re looking forward to working with him to achieve that here.”

“Blizzard Entertainment’s Warcraft has become a second home for millions of players and Sam’s experience and talent make him the perfect director for this remarkable and action-packed world,” said Atlas’ Roven. “Alex and I are proud to be working with Sam and re-teaming with our friends at Legendary and Warner Bros.”

The film will fall under Legendary Pictures’ co-production and co-financing deal with Warner Bros. “Warcraft is emblematic of the kind of branded, event films for which our studio is best known. We have enjoyed great success with our partners at Legendary, and this is an incredible opportunity for us to work with Sam on a project that is so eagerly anticipated by so many,” said Jeff Robinov, President, Warner Bros. Pictures Group.

Blizzard Entertainment’s Warcraft universe is a rich fantasy setting that revolves around the epic conflict between the opposing forces of the Horde and the Alliance. Since its debut in 1994, Warcraft has developed a loyal following across the globe, with several bestselling, award-winning PC games and a range of popular licensed products including novels, action figures, apparel, comic books, board games, and more. World of Warcraft, Blizzard Entertainment’s subscription-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game set in the Warcraft universe, is the most popular game of its kind in the world. Its most recent expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, is the fastest-selling PC game of all time, with more than 2.8 million copies sold in its first 24 hours of availability and more than 4 million in its first month.

Further details about the upcoming Warcraft movie, including cast and targeted release date, will be revealed as development progresses.

Weta Returns to Middle-earth

from Weta:

Read this message on our site and see the images!

THERE AND BACK AGAIN

Weta is returning to Middle-earth.
We are delighted to announce our new license with Warner Bros. Consumer Products to create a new range of the most authentic, fine art collectibles and memorabilia based on The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy. This range is designed and created by the same Academy Award-winning artists who worked on the movie trilogy. We have patiently waited for the opportunity to offer the most authentic replicas you could ever hope to find. The wait is over; it has been four long years since Weta last released any new collectibles from The Lord of the Rings. Our new license covers a wide range of new product categories, beginning with the following new items to be launched at San Diego Comic-Con on July 22-26, 2009.

The Master Swordsmith’s Collection — Peter Lyon of Weta Workshop
Weta will offer a very limited-edition of the most authentic swords from The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy. Each sword is individually hand-crafted by Peter Lyon, the Master Swordsmith from Weta Workshop, who created the original swords used in the movies. These blades are created using old world techniques for the sword purist, the way swords used to be made, for fighting. The first sword to be released is Anduril, in a limited-edition of only 10 worldwide. Each sword comes with a 10-minute DVD showing the artistic process and featuring interviews with Richard Taylor, John Howe and Peter Lyon. The video will shortly be made available for viewing on this website.

Gollum
A full scale replica of Gollum, a timeless sculpture, cast in bronze or in faux bronze fiberglass sculpted by the artists who helped bring him to life.

Miniature Shield Collectibles
A new range of cast metal miniature shields, built to exacting precision by Weta’s senior model maker, Dave Tremont (who built Grond and many of the miniatures used in filming the trilogy). They can be displayed as stunning collectibles on their custom built bases, or worn as badges to your next convention.

Gandalf the Grey Cloak
An exact replica of the original cloak worn in the movie trilogy, using the same woolen material, produced from the same farm in New Zealand and woven on the same 19th century looms. Woven and sewn by our friends at Stansborough, in Wellington, New Zealand, these cloaks are the real thing.

These works of art (and other new items) will shortly be available to purchase on the Weta website, wetanz.com.

All professional actors from traditional media, this marks the cast’s first appearance at the convention where the comic style and subject of the show seems ideally suited for the Comic-Con audience. Safety Geeks: SVI was recently cited in a New York Times article on the coming of longer web series and has been quickly building a following among comedy and science fiction fans, self-professed geeks, and lovers of Monty Python and Adult Swim. This live action series plays like a living comic book using special effects to create a “funny” Sin City-type world. Safety Geeks: SVI is a live-action, innovative 12 episode program that combines the familiar form and structure of investigative shows with the fresh anarchic free form of Adult Swim while drawing on the dryness of British humor, yet with a more “in your face” American feel and lots of visual gags created with the post production artistry of Konkle, Thor Melsted and Mike Smith.

According to show creators Tom Konkle and David Beeler, the show plans to use innovative technologies and ideas to create 100 percent of the surreal sets and vehicles. The production team includes Roger Tonry, Michael Sherwood and casting director Liz Paulson.

It stars David Beeler as Reginald Syngen-Smythe, Tom Konkle as Budwin Yaker and Brittney Powell as Dr. Randi Minky, Benton Jennings as Hopkins, Mary Cseh as Sparky Van Der Graff, with Jim Woods, Mark Teich, Steve Tom, Ransford Dougherty, Chanel Ryan, Laura Hayes, Frank Payne, Adria Tennor, Ben Wang and many others.

The Dave and Tom-created Safety Geeks: SVI and Invention with Brian Forbes comedy series are posted on Koldcast.TV, and merchandise and music will be for sale through KoldCast’s ShowShops with distribution also on TivoCast, Zune and iTunes as part of Koldcast’s overall deal with those companies.

Accio Harry Potter!

from Raincoast Books:

Dear readers,

It’s going to be a Harry Potter summer, from the movie of the Half-Blood Prince to the new paperback of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — last and certainly not least of the Harry Potter series, out TODAY!

Are you lining up for opening night tickets to the movie? I’ve got my Dumbledore costume all ready to go — just have to brush the owl droppings out of the beard!

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
by J.K. Rowling
Raincoast Books ISBN 978-1-55192-840-1
$18.95 paperback

It’s HERE! The long-awaited paperback of the final installment of Harry Potter arrives July 7 — just in time for summer beach reading.

To celebrate the publication of the final book, in 2007, Raincoast gathered Canadian Harry Potter fans’ messages to J.K. Rowling, and compiled them in two beautiful books. You can look through the pages of the books on our Flickr site!

I definitely recommend heading over to the website for the new Harry Potter movie, where you can watch the movie trailer (Evil Malfoys! Wizards in love! Dark magic in Central London!).

The Guardian has a slightly surreal “Harry Potter Stars — Then and Now” photo album.

J.K. Rowling’s official site has some fun stuff, too — and for the serious fans out there, don’t miss the MuggleNet, where you can get all (and I mean all) the latest Harry Potter news… including a second-by-second countdown to the movie release (at the time of writing, the clock stands at 7 days, 12 hours, 3 minutes and 35, no, wait, 34 seconds).

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Ubisoft Extends Global Reach, Opening New Studio in Toronto

from Ubisoft:

Ubisoft announced plans today to open a full development studio in Toronto, Ontario — a first for the company in the province. This significant announcement is expected to result in the creation of 800 net new jobs within the province over the next decade. The government of Ontario is investing CA$263 million over ten years in the company and Ubisoft’s net investment will be over half a billion CAD in the new studio, which will begin operations in late 2009.

“Today’s announcement marks a strategic move for Ubisoft as we continue to expand our internal development force,” said Yves Guillemot, president and chief executive officer at Ubisoft. “We are in an excellent position to grow and after extensive analysis we are thrilled to have reached an agreement with the government of Ontario to found our new studio in Toronto. The city is one of North America’s economic and cultural epicenters and our expectations are high. We’re excited to be able to count on the exceptional local talent, who will contribute to our accelerated growth and will have a profound impact on the video game industry with the excellence of their creativity.”

Ubisoft Toronto will be overseen by Yannis Mallat, chief executive officer at Ubisoft Montréal, whose proven leadership and vision will be a major asset to the growth and success of the new studio. Ubisoft Toronto will work on Triple-A games and will emulate the proven business model and creative excellence for which Ubisoft is known. In addition, Ubisoft Toronto will bring its own flavour to the global Ubisoft brand, which will benefit from the deep pool of dynamic and quality talent trained in video game design and production in the province of Ontario.

The Toronto studio will also build on the city’s existing experience with the film production industry. Collaborating with local film industry veterans to enhance video game production and extend Ubisoft’s convergence strategy, Ubisoft Toronto will contribute to Ubisoft’s global plan of extending its brands to complementary platforms and mediums, including books, comics, short films and other products.

“We are incredibly excited to finally tap into the remarkable talent Ontario has been developing over the years,” said Yannis Mallat. “Toronto’s unique pool of experienced video game industry and film industry talent will allow us to develop a team with exceptional ability to help us realize our goals for creating brands with universal appeal that extend beyond the world of video games.”

The studio in Toronto will be the fourth for Ubisoft in Canada, with other studios located in Montréal, Quebec City and Vancouver and employing more than 2,300 creative staff across the country.

Today’s announcement is made possible with the support of the Ontario provincial government and its dedication to invest in organizations that create jobs and provide long-term value for the provincial economy. Premier Dalton McGuinty was on hand today at the Ubisoft press conference in Toronto to help announce plans for the new studio and elaborate on the provincial government’s support for the endeavour, stating “Our world is one where you can borrow capital, you can copy technology and you can buy natural resources. But to build a high wage and a high standard of living you need talent. By investing in Ubisoft, we’re building Ontario’s economy now and for the future.”

Among its more than 17 multi-million selling franchises, Ubisoft is known for developing and producing such legendary game brands as Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six, Assassin’s Creed, Prince of Persia, Red Steel, Rayman, Rayman Raving Rabbids, and Far Cry.
