August Sizzles with New Digital Releases for VIZManga.com and the VIZ Manga App for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch

from VIZ Media:

VIZ Media delivers even more new digital manga (graphic novel) fun for the first-half of August as the company announces a pair of new titles that will be available on VIZManga.com and for digital download on the VIZ Manga App for the Apple iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.

The latest round of updates features the debut of Oishinbo, the appetizing series about Japanese gourmet cooking and cuisine, as well as the launch of What a Wonderful World!, Inio Asano’s poignant collection of vignettes depicting twenty-something angst, on August 8th.

Updates for the first-half of August are further augmented by new additions to 22 existing VIZ Media manga series, including Ai Ore! Vol. 2 and The Story of Saiunkoku Vol. 4, launching digitally with their print counterparts’ national release.

Oishinbo Vol. 1 · Rated ‘T’ for Teens · Available Now!
Written by Tetsu Kariya and illustrated by Akira Hanasaki, Oishinbo is considered to be the epitome of food manga and defined the genre while selling more than 100 million copies in Japan since its debut in 1983. The series depicts the adventures of journalist Shiro Yamaoka, who writes for the fictional newspaper Tozai News. As part of the celebrations for its 100th anniversary, the publishers commission the creation of the “Ultimate Menu,” a model meal embodying the pinnacle of Japanese cuisine. This all-important task has been entrusted to journalist Yamaoka Shir?, an inveterate cynic who possesses no initiative — but also an incredibly refined palate and an encyclopedic knowledge of food.

What a Wonderful World! Vol. 1 · Rated ‘T+’ for Older Teens · Available August 8th
A poignant collection of intersecting vignettes depicting twenty-something angst, What a Wonderful World! explores the various ways that modern life can be at once ridiculous and sublime, terrible and precious, wasted and celebrated. What begins with a college dropout bored of her mediocre routine soon becomes a fantastic series about the unexpected ways that lives intersect. Filled with magical realism in the face of the cold reality of modern life, these stories are about discovering something precious in the chaos of daily existence.

Billie the Unicorn

from Immedium:

Billie the Unicorn

“I am madly in love with Brianne Drouhard’s art right now. She is an illustrator and character designer, most notably she worked on Teen Titans and The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. If you enjoy her art you should check out her new book Billie the Unicorn which looks hella cute… Her style is really flexible, and reminds me of what might happen if adorable manga styled art and the art of Ren & Stimpy’s John K. had a magical baby.” — The Uniblog

See Brianne at Kidspace Children’s Museum (8/7, Pasadena, CA) and her new animated trailer.

Nintendo 3DS Price Drops to $169.99 for Great Value with New 3D Games

from Nintendo of Canada:

Nintendo of America today announced plans to drop the suggested retail price of its portable Nintendo 3DS system to $169.99 in North America, as new games based on some of the world’s most beloved video game franchises head to the system. The new price, down from the suggested launch price of $249.99 and effective August 12, makes an outstanding value even better and sets up a strong holiday season for the system.

“For anyone who was on the fence about buying a Nintendo 3DS, this is a huge motivation to buy now,” said Nintendo of America President, Reggie Fils-Aime. “We are giving shoppers every incentive to pick up a Nintendo 3DS, from an amazing new price to a rapid-fire succession of great games.”

Nintendo 3DS has the strongest software lineup of any video game system this holiday season and the new price now opens up the glasses-free 3D experience to many more consumers. Building on the popularity of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, which launched June 19, the upcoming game calendar is a Who’s Who of iconic video game franchises. Star Fox 64 3D arrives on September 9, followed by Super Mario 3D Land in November, Mario Kart 7 in December and Kid Icarus: Uprising during the holiday season.

In addition to great games, Nintendo 3DS has a host of attractive features* that make it the must-have video game system this season:

* The new Nintendo Video service automatically delivers short 3D videos from the worlds of music, comedy, animation and Hollywood.
* A free application allows Netflix members with unlimited streaming plans to instantly watch TV episodes and movies streaming from Netflix.
* The Nintendo eShop is a digital store for Nintendo 3DS owners that provides access to a wide variety of downloadable content, such as original 3D software, classic games that have been re-mastered in 3D called 3D Classics, Game Boy and Game Boy Color “Virtual Console” games in their original 2D glory, and more than 350 Nintendo DSiWare games. Visitors can also view video game trailers, screen shots and product information for games, including those available at retail locations.

Since Nintendo 3DS launched in North America on March 27, nearly 900,000 people in North America have purchased one to enjoy 3D visuals without the need for special glasses. These Nintendo 3DS owners represent some of Nintendo’s most loyal customers, and Nintendo is rewarding them for getting in on the action early with 20 free downloadable games from the Nintendo eShop.

These free games are available to anyone who owns a Nintendo 3DS system and uses a wireless broadband Internet signal to connect to the Nintendo eShop at least once before 11:59 p.m. Eastern time on August 11. These users will automatically be registered in the Nintendo 3DS Ambassador program. The program contains two elements:

1. Starting September 1, Nintendo 3DS Ambassadors will be able to download 10 NES Virtual Console games at no charge and before they are available in the Nintendo eShop to the general public. These games, including Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong Jr., Balloon Fight, Ice Climber and The Legend of Zelda, are slated to become paid downloadable games, but Ambassadors get them early for free. Once the paid versions of the games are posted to the Nintendo eShop later in the year, the updated versions will be available to Ambassadors for download at no cost.
2. By the end of 2011, Nintendo will provide Ambassadors with 10 Game Boy Advance Virtual Console games. These include games like Yoshi’s Island: Super Mario Advance 3, Mario Kart: Super Circuit, Metroid Fusion, WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$! and Mario vs. Donkey Kong. These games will be available exclusively to Ambassadors, and Nintendo currently has no plans to make these 10 games available to the general public on the Nintendo 3DS in the future.

More details about this program will be announced in the future.

Remember that Nintendo 3DS features parental controls that let adults manage the content their children can access. For more information about this and other features, visit nintendo.com/3ds.

*Some features require a broadband Internet connection.

MST3K vs. Gamera: Mystery Science Theater 3000, Vol. XXI (Deluxe Edition) 5-DVD Set to Be Released from Shout! Factory

from Shout! Factory:

IN STORES AUGUST 2

Shout! Factory, in association with Best Brains, Inc., is proud to announce MST3K vs. Gamera: Mystery Science Theater 3000, Vol. XXI (Deluxe Edition), will be released on August 2, 2011. The 5-DVD set is housed in a limited-edition tin, with 5 mini-posters, and includes the titles Gamera, Gamera Vs. Barugon, Gamera Vs. Gaos, Gamera Vs. Guiron and Gamera Vs. Zigra. SRP $64.99. Through a special offer only from Shout! Factory, fans who order the set at the Shout! Factory Store will receive a free Gamera postcard pack and MST3K Stress Ball.

What could possibly be better suited to the always-quotable wisecracks of beloved SoL captive Joel Robinson and his faithful robot sidekicks, Tom Servo and Crow T. Robot, than a monster movie about a giant flying turtle? The answer is — four other movies about same flying turtle! Behold the first-ever themed collection of Mystery Science Theater 3000 classics: all five Gamera episodes from the particularly fertile third season of the long-running cult comedy television series… in their own shell!

In Gamera, East-West tensions literally ignite an atomic explosion in the Arctic, and scientists must find a way to stop one very unexpected fallout: the rampage of a giant, flying turtle unearthed from its glacial tomb in the lost city of Atlantis. If ever there was an argument for world peace, this would be it. On the Satellite of Love, a much more familiar version of the reptile is celebrated in the now-legendary torch song tribute to Servo’s pet turtle, “Tibby, Oh Tibby!” Bonus features include the MST Hour host segments, original Japanese trailer, and So Happy Together: A Look Back At MST3K & Gamera.

In Gamera Vs. Barugon, Gamera is back, only this time he’s playing for our team. In color! When a private expedition to retrieve a mysterious opal unwittingly unleashes a monster lizard, Gamera returns to Earth for the ultimate reptilian rumble. Climate change meets Theatre of the Absurd as our favorite fire-spewing turtle takes on a larger-than-life lizard with freezing breath. On the SoL, the jokes fly faster than an airborne turtle, and Crow and Tom fan the flames of another battle of the ages: PC vs. Mac. Like it’s even a question. Bonus features include the original Japanese trailer and Gamera Vs. The Chiodo Brothers, in which the acclaimed special effects team (Killer Klowns from Outer Space, Pee Wee’s Big Adventure, Elf) waxes nostalgic about Gamera, Japanese monster movies and men in rubber suits.

Gamera solidifies his new status as protector of humanity in Gamera Vs. Gaos, when he’s called upon to defeat Gaos, an enormous bat with deadly spit-lasers. What Gaos is prepared to do with those lasers to survive, you’ll have to watch and see — but feel free to make your own “I Kept My Eyes Open For 92 Minutes” T-shirt. Much like Gaos, the riffs are relentless, strange and funny. And so is the SoL’s extremely short-lived production of Gameradamerung. Bonus features include Gamera Obscura: A Brief History by August Ragone (author of Eiji Tsuburaya: Master of Monsters), and the original Japanese trailer.

Gamera comes to the rescue of two young boys abducted by alien women with a taste for growing brains in Gamera Vs. Guiron. As if that doesn’t keep the heroic turtle busy enough, there’s Guiron (part monster, part cutlery) to contend with. Yes, it’s another heaping portion of giant monsters going at it and not “using their words” — fortified with essential messages about trust and kindness. Also, live from Deep 13 and the SoL: a very special evening of tributes to the Gamera theme song. The MST Hour host segments and the original Japanese trailer of the film are included as bonus features.

The final installment of the original Gamera series, Gamera Vs. Zigra, was completed shortly before Daiei Studios went bankrupt, and it’s not hard to see why. Gamera returns to save Earth from yet another alien with Earth envy. But lest you worry that it’s another portion of more of the same, this time the monster can talk, and this time it looks like a fish. Zigra (it’s a ship and a monster and a planet) blames our “Earth science” for rendering his home planet’s oceans uninhabitable. Needless to say, we are all punished for it. Invention exchanges, dioramas and two more wildly different takes on Gamera’s theme song… the wait is over. The original Japanese trailer is included as a bonus feature.

MST3K vs. Gamera Bonus Features:
So Happy Together: A Look Back At MST3K & Gamera
Gamera Obscura: A History by August Ragone (author of Eiji Tsuburaya: Master of Monsters)
Gamera Vs. The Chiodo Brothers
MST Hour host segments
Original Japanese Trailers
