Riese: The Hunt Begins 2011 on SPACECAST.com

from SPACE:

Canadian sci-fi fans have been clamoring to see the web exclusive Riese that has only been available online in the U.S. … until now! SPACE announced that the hunt is set to begin in Canada early in 2011, premiering exclusively on spacecast.com.

Centered around a reluctant heroine, Riese flees across the dying lands while being hunted by a terrifying religious group, The Sect. Her past is shrouded in mystery as even Riese can’t recall the events of the tragic night when her entire family was slaughtered and she was forced to flee. On her journey she will piece together her past and her destiny.

What The Globe and Mail has called “the hottest new Canadian fantasy series”, the Steampunk-styled Riese has a stellar cast with genre faves, including Emilie Ullerup and Ryan Robbins (Sanctuary), Allison Mack (Smallville), Alessandro Juliani (Battlestar Galactica), Patrick Gilmore (Stargate Universe), Sharon Taylor (Stargate Atlantis), Ben Cotton (Caprica) and starring Christine Chatelain (Sanctuary, Supernatural) as Riese. The series is narrated by Amanda Tapping (Stargate, Sanctuary).

Irvin Kershner Remembered

from StarWars.com:

Irvin Kershner, known to most fans as the director of the first Star Wars sequel, The Empire Strikes Back, passed away in Los Angeles on Saturday, November 28. He was 87 years old.

“The world has lost a great director and one of the most genuine people I’ve had the pleasure of knowing,” says George Lucas. “Irvin Kershner was a true gentleman in every sense of the word. When I think of Kersh, I think of his warmth, his thoughtfulness and his talent. I knew him from USC — I attended his lectures and he was actually on the festival panel that gave the prize to my THX short. I considered him a mentor.

“Following Star Wars, I knew one thing for sure: I didn’t want to direct the second movie myself. I needed someone I could trust, someone I really admired and whose work had maturity and humor. That was Kersh all over. I didn’t want Empire to turn into just another sequel, another episode in a series of space adventures. I was trying to build something, and I knew Kersh was the guy to help me do it. He brought so much to the table. I am truly grateful to him.

“He was a friend as well as a colleague. He will be missed.”

Irvin Kershner was very proud of his work on The Empire Strikes Back, as these interviews conducted with the director in 1990, 2000, and 2010 can attest. Fans and celebrities have also chimed in to offer their regards, and many tribute articles have been appearing throughout the press and blogosphere — check StarWars.com’s Facebook and Twitter feeds for updates as the world mourns the loss of one of the Star Wars saga’s brightest stars.

The Console Killer

from GeekChicDaily:

The history of video game development is littered with failed gaming systems. There was the Nokia N-Gage, a game system/cell phone that actually required you to remove the phone’s battery to switch game cards. Remember Nintendo’s Virtual Boy? Everyone loves an eyepiece on a stand that produces 3D images… and ocular damage in young children. How about the RDI Halcyon? Price? $2500. Total number of games released? Two.

You can forget the aforementioned. The eggheads at OnLive have engineered what may finally become button-mashing’s next great leap forward. Today marks the debut of their OnLive Game System, a device that lets you stream video games for the Xbox, PC and PS3 while owning almost no hardware.

OnLive’s new MicroConsole is about the size of a deck of cards and it does little processing work on its own. Instead, it connects your TV to the company’s servers, which stream games that you’ve bought or rented. What’s the catch? You need a pretty speedy internet tap to avoid diminished graphics and controller lag. For max performance, OnLive recommends an internet connection speed of 5Mbps, although it should still function at 3 Mbps. The best part? Because the console is portable and the games live in the computing cloud, you can start playing a title on your home PC, pick up a saved game on your laptop and maybe finish on the TV at your hotel. (Although why you’d be playing a game at a hotel and not watching Skinemax is beyond us.)

“The Guild” Comic gets Trade Paperback release, and DVD out 12/21

from The Guild:

Today the initial three part mini-series of The Guild comic is released as a trade paperback (all three issues in a bound collection). The trade paperback includes some new extras, including a sketchbook section and pinups, as well as a foreward by director of The Guild Sean Becker. While many of you reading this may already have all three issues (and even in duplicate covers, and as a digital comic too!), hopefully you’ll consider buying this in “graphic novel” form or making it a gift to someone who might enjoy the show.

Publishing the comic in trade paperback form gets The Guild into traditional bookstores and gets it in front of new audiences. The Guild comic received great reviews, and that continues with the trade paperback. The New York Journal of Books calls it “Equal parts geeky love letter and cautionary tale … (it) succeeds on a number of nuanced levels and should appeal to most readers, regardless of their own backgrounds in pop culture,” and Tor.com has a great review which calls the book “a well-written, well-drawn mini-series that should entertain new readers and fans of The Guild alike.”

The Guild from Dark Horse Comics is available in bookstores everywhere, as well as comic shops (find your local store at ComicStoreLocator.com or by calling 1-888-ComicBook). Online you can purchase at TFAW.com, Amazon.com, Borders.com, BarnesandNoble.com, Chapters.ca and more.

In other release news, The Guild Season 4 on DVD will be released December 21 exclusively on Amazon.com. Yes, for the first time, we scrambled and got the DVD out in time for Christmas.
