VIZ Media opens the Fall season with a bevy of new manga (graphic novels) titles that will be available on VIZManga.com and for digital download on the VIZ Manga App for the Apple iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.
October first half of the month updates are highlighted by new additions to 16 top VIZ Media manga series. The update includes the continuation of a manga “speed up” for Bleach and One Piece that will bring both series up to date with their North American print counterparts by December. With mind-expanding augmented-reality modes, more than 20 unique modes of play and a variety of multiplayer options, the game offers something new for everyone, whether you’re a Tetris veteran or just getting your first taste of this unique franchise.
Tetris: Axis combines traditional elements from the original Tetris game with new twists and features that showcase the unique capabilities of the portable Nintendo 3DS. The main goal is to maneuver and arrange falling blocks called Tetriminos to clear lines and boost your score. With two new augmented-reality modes in Tetris: Axis, the iconic puzzle action moves beyond the screen as players use AR Cards (included with the Nintendo 3DS system) to view game play in their own real-world environments. Other new modes include Fever, in which players must clear lines and activate special items in speedy 60-second rounds. Nintendo 3DS owners with wireless broadband Internet access can download new items for Fever mode via the system’s built-in SpotPass feature.
“People all over the world have experienced the fun of the Tetris game, but they’ve never seen it quite like this,” said Ron Bertram, Nintendo of Canada’s vice-president and general manager. “The augmented-reality modes and 3D visuals in Tetris: Axis add some wonderfully immersive twists that are unique to this version of the Tetris game.”
Tetris: Axis also offers nine party modes, including three that are new to the Tetris franchise. Local wireless modes allow up to eight players to enjoy Tetris: Axis simultaneously using only one Game Card (each player must have his or her own Nintendo 3DS system). By using Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection to compete with friends over broadband Internet, as many as eight players can dive into the action.

Thor is the rare superhero movie that raises important questions. Namely, the important question “If Thor was considered the good superhero movie of 2011, just exactly how wretched must Green Lantern have been?”
Yes, Thor, for all its critical acclaim, features not one, not two, but three distinct scenes of our hero being rendered unconscious for comedic effect all within five minutes of each other! (For the record, in order: Thor is tazed, injected and hit by a van. Rumor has it the Extended Cut features a scene where he is trampled by a hungry hippo.)
No doubt this cartoonish buffoonery is the touch of acclaimed director Kenneth Branagh, whose intention for Thor seems to have been “Let’s bring out the Shakespearean elements of the comic book, but instead of soliloquies, we’ll have grunting, and instead of intrigue, more grunting.” Sadly, Branagh fails to deliver on the demands made by the most hardcore Thor fans, that he bring to the silver screen the short lived 1985 plot line where Loki turns Thor into a frog and he helps other frogs defeat some rats (this actually happened and you should look it up right now.)
So you don’t get any frogs, but you do get fanservice, a thoroughly implausible love story and a performance by Sir Anthony Hopkins that were it any more phoned in, would be conducted through two tin cans and a piece of string. Mike, Kevin and Bill needed a nice long Odinsleep once this one was over.

Launching today for the Nintendo DS family of hand-held systems, Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 unleashes an epic adventure in which players can recruit, train and battle with imaginative monsters of all shapes and sizes. Better yet, players can create their own customized monsters by synthesizing two different ones and blending their unique traits and capabilities. With the built-in wireless features of Nintendo DS systems, it’s also simple and fun for users to connect with each other — locally and around the world — to share game data and engage in memorable monster battles together.
In Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2, players take on the role of a Monster Scout who has crash-landed on a mysterious island. To rescue missing passengers and members of the airship crew, they must assemble a strong team of monsters and fend off enemies in strategic turn-based battles. The game includes more than 300 monsters that can be recruited for battle and synthesized with other monsters to create new, more powerful ones. With more than 240 skill trees to choose from, players can customize their teams to prepare for all kinds of enemy encounters. Some monsters — including the iconic Slime — return from previous installments in the Dragon Quest series, while others are new.
“Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 is an extraordinary way for new and experienced fans to immerse themselves in the Dragon Quest universe and its colourful cast of monsters,” said Ron Bertram, Nintendo of Canada’s vice-president and general manager. “Players will have fun experimenting with different monster combos and unleashing them on their friends.”
Using a local wireless connection, as many as eight players can battle their monster teams against one another. Players with broadband Internet access can also use the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection service to battle other Monster Scouts or take part in a weekly Wi-Fi World Tournament that connects players from all over the globe.
Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 also supports a number of Tag Mode options that can be used to exchange game data with others. By connecting via Tag Mode to other Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 game owners, players can battle each other and scout their respective monsters. Players can also scout additional monsters by connecting with owners of the Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation or Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies games.
