Looney Labs Releases “Back to the Future: The Card Game”

Back to the Future: The Card Game

from Looney Labs:

It’s been 25 years since Marty McFly strapped himself into a modified Delorean DMC-12 and traveled “Back to the Future” to 1955. Today, Looney Labs, creators of the run away hit card game Fluxx (a coincidental name but no relation to time travel), has created an exciting new card game based on the Back to the Future trilogy. The game is developed through a licensing agreement with Universal Partnerships & Licensing.

Back to the Future: The Card Game is based on all three movies and features an innovative take on traditional card games. One fourth of the cards in the deck are arranged on the table in a grid, forming a “Timeline” of events that functions similar to the gameboard of a board game.

Using a patented game mechanic (US Patent 6,474,650) the Timeline allows players to put themselves into the movie plot and rewrite movie history via time travel. Players take on the roles of future descendants of the characters in the films, who must protect their existence by making sure specific “Linchpin” events are put right.

The game is “pure genius!” says Stephen Clark, Back to the Future blogger. Clark provided expert input into the time of key events to keep them authentic to the story. “The level of detail that Looney Labs was able to pack into this game is incredible. They’ve put quite a unique spin on the timeless film series by making the goal of the game to be the first player to un-invent time travel.”

The game features spectacular new artwork by Derek Ring, noted for his excellent work on previous Looney Labs games including Zombie Fluxx and EcoFluxx.

Back to the Future: The Card Game goes on sale in game stores in the U.S., Canada, and the UK on September 3, 2010 just weeks ahead of the Blu-ray debut and DVD release of the Back to the Future 25th Anniversary Trilogy on October 26, featuring all-new restorations of the classic films.

That’s right. It’s almost time for you little sponges to put down the gamepads and start soaking up the cold hard facts of life! While this may not be the awesome you hoped for it is critical to your long-term success as a gamer. You’ll learn some pretty cool stuff like how to add and subtract large denominations of rupees, conjure potions (I wouldn’t recommend drinking them), craft the finest of weaponry from balsa wood, triangulate the location of your healer in Azeroth, or devise a low entropy arrangement of blocks for a higher Tetris score. There’s an infinite list of ways school will help you take pwnage to new heights! There’s also a short bit about pirates, ninja’s, and samurai’s, so yeah — you don’t want to miss that.

If you’re still in the dumps over the reduction of gaming hours, or fear your epic chest piece offers no protection from being stuffed into a locker by the captain of the football team, at least we have some awesome t-shirts on sale! The amount of time it takes a bully to understand them might be just enough for you to make like Sonic and run like hell! Check them out…

Xenomorphs want you for your body, zombies want you for your brains, and geeks will want you for this t-shirt.

EPIC LIFE T-SHIRT $16.95
When you have a level 60 toon with enough gold, armor, and weaponry to arm a small country, real life tends to feel slightly inferior. We know this all too well, and support your denial with our first customer design, the Epic Life t-shirt. Since a walk to the corner store doesn’t hold as much weight as a 40-man siege, ganking spree, or an 8 hour farming session, let the world know you’re just an alt.

You know him, you’ve played against him. He spits profanities, screams ignorance, and manages to quit every losing game just before the stats save. Mr. Rage-Quit!

LIGHT GUN T-SHIRT $12.00
If only we could actually get our hands on a gun like this, life would turn into one big video game!

MANGA BABY TEE $10.00

ThinkGeek battles Angry Sun with a Summer Sale

from ThinkGeek:

Summer con-goers, we salute you!

We’ve returned triumphant from SDCC, having rubbed elbows with — or at least seen — the geek elite. Timmy’s a bit miffed that his costumes didn’t make it in time, but otherwise, a geektacular time was had by all. We also have a newfound respect for cosplayers who braved the San Diego sun while wearing full bodysuits and/or leather or leather-esque products. You folks are seriously hardcore.

And speaking of geeks we respect, Happy Birthday, Gary Gygax. We still miss you.

It’s That-Winter-Holiday-You-Celebrate in July!
The Sun is a mass of incandescent gas… we mean, plasma. It’s dang hot out, almost like a nuclear furnace, and we’re feeling a little delirious. So if you check out our Summer Sale and some prices look a little TOO LOW, you may want to grab those items quickly before we come to our senses. For now, we need to go find some lemonade and sit by the AC vent.

Atom.com Launches Third and Final Season of Hit Web Series “Legend of Neil”

from Atom.com:

Following a world premiere at San Diego Comic-Con 2010, the third and final season of Streamy-nominated Legend of Neil launches today at Atom.com, the digital comedy network and COMEDY CENTRAL’s anchor brand for original digital content. With over 4.5 million plays, the hit Web series created by Sandeep Parikh and starring Tony Janning, Mike Rose, Scott Chernoff and Felicia Day (Red, The Guild) has built an enthusiastic fan base since its debut in 2008. After a raucous screening to an audience of over 500 fans at Comic-Con on Saturday, season three of Legend of Neil officially kicks off with Atom.com’s online release of episode 301 today at legendofneil.com.

Legend of Neil follows Neil (Tony Janning) as he is sucked into the classic video game Legend of Zelda after a heavy night of drinking and is forced to become the iconic elfin hero that is Link. The third season introduces several new friends and foes, revisits Neil’s relationship with Felicia Day’s tiny foul-mouthed Fairy and continues his journey through the game to save the princess (Angie Hill). Guest stars include the Sklar Brothers (Cheap Seats, Back on Topps), Alex Albrecht (Totally Rad Show, Diggnation), Jeff Lewis (The Guild), Robert Hoffman (Step Up 2: The Streets) and Fahim Anwar and David Harris (MTV’s Disaster Date). Featured musicians who have recorded theme music for the third season include Dragon Boy Suede (Jimmy Kimmel Live!, COMEDY CENTRAL Presents), Internet stars Molly Lewis and Garfunkel and Oates, Paul and Storm (The Bob & Tom Show) and Jonathan Coulton (Portal).

“Tony and I have wanted this series to be a trilogy of seasons and we can’t thank the folks over at Atom enough for getting behind our vision and making the third and final season possible,” said creator Sandeep Parikh. “Without a doubt, season three will be our most epic, ridiculous, raunchy, absurd and nerdiest of them all. We’ve assembled an incredible cast and crew, which really enabled me to push the bounds of Web television.”

With the runaway success of Legend of Neil and Parikh’s longstanding relationship with Atom.com, the creator has secured a blind script deal with the Atom.com’s on-air partner, COMEDY CENTRAL. The deal commissions Parikh to develop and write for the network.

Seven new episodes will debut during season three of Legend of Neil, with one new episode premiering every other Tuesday. The season will include bonus videos and behind-the-scenes material. Additionally, this fall Parikh will host an episode of Atom TV, COMEDY CENTRAL’s half-hour, late-night series featuring original Web programming from Atom.com.

All episodes from all seasons of Legend of Neil can be viewed at Atom’s official site for the series at legendofneil.com.

“Liebrary” Board Game

Liebrary

Bookworms who enjoy intellectually challenging social games like Trivial Pursuit, Scattergories, or Balderdash will delight in the creative-thinking gameplay of Liebrary, “The Game Where the First Line Speaks Volumes”.

In Liebrary, players are given a book title and the plot summary and then asked to create the most believable first line of the book. The object of the game is to bluff other players into believing that your first line is the correct one. The more outrageous, the better!

Liebrary was co-designed by actresses and best friends Daryl Hannah and Hilary Shepard, who took inspiration for their game from an old parlor game that had the same concept as Liebrary, but required access to hundreds of actual books to play. When Hannah and Shepard decided to create a portable version of the parlor game that could be played in the absence of a library, or taken along on family vacations, Liebrary sprang into creation. (If you do have new or favourite books on hand, though, you can easily incorporate them into gameplay.) A set of book cards lists the title, author, plot, and first line of books, conveniently condensing hundreds of novels into a single, small card box. The card box is styled after a card catalogue drawer, a reference that may likely be lost on younger players, since the card catalogue has largely disappeared from libraries in the age of computers, but players over the age of thirty will appreciate the nostalgic touch. Along with the game board and other playing pieces, the card box fits inside a larger box that, appropriately enough, resembles a thick book. Liebrary’s elegant box cover recreates the look of a worn, green, leather-bound volume, and can be gorgeously displayed on a bookshelf with real books.

Fantasy fans know Hannah best as Madison the mermaid from the classic 1980s film Splash, but she’s also a dedicated environmentalist, so it’s no surprise that a sticker on the front of the package assures eco-friendly game players that Liebrary is “printed on recycled paper using soy-based inks”.

In addition to the standard, travel-size game, there’s also a deluxe Liebrary: Family Edition, which Hannah introduces in the following 2010 Toy Fair video:

You don’t need to be well-read to play Liebrary, just really convincing, and the gameplay is quite easy to learn, so even children and novice players can jump right in. Up to six players move across the simple game board using wooden, book-shaped tokens called Liebrary Book Pawns. To move ahead, you must earn points: one for every vote your first line gets from the other players, and two if you vote for the book’s real first line. Three points go to the Liebrarian if nobody picks the right line. There are 350 book cards in the card catalog box, divided into five genre categories: Fiction/Non-Fiction, Classics, Mystery/Sci-Fi/Horror, Romance, and Children’s. A Category Die is rolled each round to determine which book category the book card will be drawn from. The Liebrarian then reads aloud the title, author, and plot on the book card (but not the first line!), and sets the sand timer. Players have two minutes to write down their first line — either a creative guess or, if you’re familiar with the book, the actual opening sentence. (The less seriously you take the game, the more fun it is!) The first lines are read out and each player votes for the line that they think is best, after which the Liebrarian reveals the true first line written on the book card. Some squares on the game board also require a random Liebrary Card to be drawn. There are ten Liebrary Cards, and, depending on the messages printed on them, such as “You got a book deal! Move ahead two spaces!” or “Writer’s block! Go back one space.”, will forward or hinder your gameplay. The winner of Liebrary is the first player to make it to the final square on the game board, marked “THE END”.

Liebrary supports 3 or more players, ages 12 and up. Game length: variable.

After playing Liebrary, be sure to check out Discovery Bay Games’ Locale, a geography-themed bluffing game featuring “Exotic Destinations and Hilarious Deceptions”:

The object of Locale is to make up a story by explaining as much as you can about a given location. (Do you know where Bird-in-Hand is? How about Timbuktu?) Bluff your way around the globe!

Daryl Hannah and Hilary Shepard have two more games coming soon, as well. Famous Last Lines, “The Party Game Where You Have the Last Line”, is a movie version of Liebrary, while Call It!, “A Quick-Thinking Game Where There’s a Perfect Call for Every Match!”, is a memory challenge card game.

Liebrary and its fellow games are certain to become playtime favourites… no lie.

Dark Horse to Unveil the First Look at “Turok, Son of Stone” at Comic-Con International!

from Dark Horse Comics:

Building on the success of the Dark Horse Gold Key line, today the Company announced that it would provide the comic world with the very first look at the highly-anticipated Turok, Son of Stone comic at this week’s Comic-Con International 2010 in San Diego, California. News of the line was first announced at Comic-Con International 2009, and fans have been anxiously awaiting details ever since.

Perhaps the best-known character in the iconic Gold Key line, Turok has been highly visible in the public eye in recent years, following its incredibly successful video game franchise, as well as the acclaimed feature length animated, Turok: Son of Stone.

Now, Turok returns to the comic book world helmed by comic book veteran, Jim Shooter, with art by Eduardo Francisco (Mass Effect: Incursion), and incredible covers by Raymond Swanland (Magnus: Robot Fighter, Aliens vs. Predator), arriving in your local comic shop this October.

“Turok was one of my favorite comics in my youth,” said Mike Richardson, president of Dark Horse Comics. “We’re having great fun re-imagining the series with Jim and we are building up to some great surprises for those familiar with the character as well as new readers.”

“One continuum over from ours, Earth is still in its Cretaceous Period,” Jim Shooter explained. “However, a drifting rift in spacetime is sweeping things from anywhen here to there. It’s a dangerous place. How strong, how tough, how smart would you have to be to survive, to thrive, to become a force to be reckoned with? This is a story about about a fearless man who will find a way. I love this series.”

Fans are encouraged to attend the Dark Horse publishing panel on Friday, July 23rd at 11:30am in Room 3, for exclusive news on Turok, and the rest of the Gold Key titles.

Dark Horse to Give First Look at “Mass Effect: Evolution” at Comic-Con!

from Dark Horse Comics:

Following the incredible success of Dark Horse Comics’ Mass Effect: Redemption, the publisher will join forces again with BioWare, a studio of Electronic Arts Inc., for an all-new comic book series based on the blockbuster sci-fi action videogame Mass Effect 2 that sold two million copies in its first week and earned a 96% score on the industry-watched review aggregator Metacritic. Scheduled to launch on January 19, 2011, Mass Effect: Evolution will take fans to a new corner of the Mass Effect universe, shedding light for the first time on the origin of the Illusive Man and the founding of his black-ops outfit, Cerberus.

Mass Effect: Evolution reunites the creative team of Redemption with Mac Walters, Lead Writer of Mass Effect 2 and the upcoming Mass Effect 3, writing the story and bringing his unmatched understanding of Mass Effect’s characters to the comics. Walters is joined by John Jackson Miller (Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, The Invincible Iron Man), who scripts the series, and Omar Francia (Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2), who returns as artist. The team will be joined by Massimo Carnevale (Y: The Last Man, Buffy the Vampire Slayer), who provides stunning painted covers.

“It’s exciting to be working once again with Dark Horse and the creative team from Redemption,” Walters said. “I really enjoyed taking this series in a darker, grittier direction — a fact that’s reflected in Massimo’s outstanding covers. I’m sure fans of the universe and comics alike will enjoy this new glimpse into the Mass Effect universe!”

“Our first Mass Effect series exceeded all expectations,” Dark Horse Publisher Mike Richardson said. “We’re very excited about continuing the adventures of these great characters and working with the great folks at EA.”

The four-issue series offers the most revealing glimpse to date of humans’ first steps into the wider universe of Mass Effect. Opening in a time of war, Evolution introduces a younger and very different Illusive Man, fighting to maintain human autonomy from alien interference, a cause that takes him behind enemy lines and into conflict with some of Mass Effect’s most dangerous figures. His journey from dissident to power broker presents new insights into the Mass Effect saga for existing fans, while the focus on the earliest days of Cerberus provides a riveting story of action and intrigue for sci-fi readers of all stripes.

Dark Horse will be revealing more about the series and cover art from issue #1 at San Diego Comic-Con International. Comic-Con attendees should head to the “Video Game Comics — The Next Big Thing” panel on Thursday, July 22 at 1 p.m. in Room 5AB or the “Dark Horse Comics: Make Contact in 2010” panel on Friday, July 23 at 11:30 a.m. in Room 3 for more!
