“Instructions” by Neil Gaiman

Instructions

Neil Gaiman’s Instructions follows The Dangerous Alphabet, Blueberry Girl, and Crazy Hair as the author’s fourth children’s picture book in the span of two years. It’s also his second collaboration with artist Charles Vess in a little over half that time, with both Instructions and Blueberry Girl being adapted into children’s books from Gaiman’s popular poems of the same title. (Crazy Hair, illustrated by Dave McKean, was also based on a previously written poem, so this appears to be a new picture book trend for Gaiman.)

Instructions is essentially a list of survival tips for anyone who finds themself wandering through a fairy tale world, much like Alice tumbling into Wonderland, and covers all the common situations that have become beloved clichés of fairy tales. Written in 2000, Instructions was first published in the anthology A Wolf at the Door and appeared on the Endicott Studios website, where you can still read the full text. The poem is a natural fit for a children’s picture book, since its charm and humour is best appreciated when read aloud, as demonstrated in one of Gaiman’s live venue readings or his narration of the animated book trailer.

This is actually the second time that Instructions has been professionally illustrated. An exclusive poster version of the poem was included as a special feature in the 2007 book Brian Froud’s World of Faerie, with original art created by British artists Brian and Wendy Froud. Charles Vess’ artistic interpretation is just as fantastical, but better suited to a younger audience. While both styles draw heavily from traditional fairy tale designs, the Frouds’ art is more adult-oriented, with a darker palette and themes that may be slightly scary to children. Vess’ watercolours are light and whimsical, full of bright colours and fun hidden references. Children and adults alike will delight in spotting archetypal characters, such as Red Riding Hood and the Three Billy Goats Gruff, who make subtle appearances in many of the backgrounds. In Blueberry Girl, the main character’s age and race was depicted differently on each page, which made her relatable to a wide spectrum of readers. Vess goes a step further in Instructions, choosing to portray the protagonist as an anthropomorphised fox instead of human, a sort of Puss in Boots who transcends age, nationality, and even gender. Besides serving as a readily accessible stand-in for anyone who picks up the book, the classic animal guide gives the paintings a timeless feel, like they were reprints from lavish old volumes of fairy stories rather than modern works.

Instructions is a much smaller picture book than Blueberry Girl, which is handy, because it’s the sort of book you’ll want to carry everywhere, just in case you suddenly have need of the valuable advice it contains. Kirkus Reviews notes that the poem “could be instructions for a child, a writer, a newly minted adult or an elder,” with publisher HarperCollins adding that “its message of the value of courage, wit, and adventurousness makes it a perfect gift for anyone embarking on a journey, especially graduates of any age.”

Whether your travels take you through the otherworld or real world, be sure to read your Instructions and have a safe and wonderful journey!

The Mystery Science Theater 3000 series was created by Joel Hodgson and produced by Jim Mallon. After a year on KTMA TV in Minneapolis, its national broadcast life began in 1989 on the Comedy Channel (later to become Comedy Central), where it ran for seven seasons. The show’s final three seasons aired on the Sci-Fi Channel. The premise of the series features a hapless man who is trapped by mad scientists on a satellite in space and forced to watch old B-movies of questionable worth. To keep sane, he’s built two robot sidekicks, and together they do a running commentary on the films, affectionately mocking their flaws with inspired wisecracks and acting as a demented movie theater peanut gallery. Series creator Hodgson originally played the stranded man, Joel Robinson. When he left in 1993, series head writer Mike Nelson replaced him as the new B-movie victim Mike Nelson, and continued in the role for the rest of the show’s run. The format proved to be popular. During its eleven years and 198 episodes (including one feature film), MST3K attained a loyal fan base and critical acclaim. The series won a Peabody Award in 1993, and was nominated for writing Emmys in 1994 and 1995.

The Guild Comic #3

from The Guild:

The third and final issue of The Guild comic book is out today. As with the previous two issues, two versions of the cover art exist, one by series artist Jim Rugg and one by Juan Ferreyra. If you’d like to learn more about Jim Rugg, visit his website and check out this interview with him. Get issue #3 from your local comic book store or from online retailers such as Things From Another World.

And coinciding with the release of The Guild #3, issue #2 is now live in the iTunes Store. You can purchase issue #1 and issue #2 for 99 cents each, viewable on your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. Issue #3 should arrive to the iTunes store in about a month.

Again we’d like to state that the response to the comic has been amazing, proving once again that fans of The Guild are the best ever — thanks for all the support. Felicia has blogged about how rewarding (if difficult) it was to extend the world of The Guild into a new medium, and all the cast has been thrilled to be depicted as comic book characters. Join us in our forums to discuss the comic. And if you’re a Guildie who is new to comic books (many of you told us you were), we direct you again to this insightful “Making of” feature from Dark Horse Comics that shows issue #1 in various stages.

Also, we’ve answered some frequently asked questions below. 🙂

The Guild management

Q: Just 3 issues, is that all?
For now, yes. Dark Horse Comics has been a great partner, Felicia enjoyed writing the comic and the reviews from critics and fans was very positive. If you would like to see more, the number one thing you can do is purchase the comics in print and via iTunes, because that speaks the loudest in terms of a business decision to produce more comics of The Guild. In addition, you can contact Dark Horse and Felicia (via The Guild contact form) and let us know you want more of The Guild in comic form.

Q: Can I get the comics outside the US?
It depends. We know that in the UK it’s available (check Forbidden Planet). Some online retailers in the US do have international shipping options.

Q: Will these 3 issues be compiled and released in graphic novel form?
There are no plans to at this time, but it might be a possibility in the future.

Q: Will the comic app work on my (Android/PC/non-iPhone-iPad-iPod) hardware or on another comic book reader?
No, it’s an app for the iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch only. If you’d like to encourage Dark Horse Comics to develop for other platforms, we suggest writing them via their contact form.
