Nexus Game Fair Returns Summer Gaming Conventions to Milwaukee

After a 12 year hiatus, summer convention gaming returns to the city of Milwaukee with the inaugural show of Nexus Game Fair which is set for June 19-22, 2014. With hundreds of individual events planned, an extensive line-up of industry special guests and VIPs, Nexus Game Fair is ready for success.

“Gamers are interested in affordable, centrally located destinations,” says show founder Chris Hoffner, “and Milwaukee has both great history and nostalgia for game conventions, having hosted both the Gen Con and Origins Game Fairs.  Milwaukee is also a great travel destination, with an international airport, professional sports teams and internationally known breweries.”

Events Manager, Harold Johnson, is the former director of Gen Con who led that show to grow to over 20,000 attendees during the 1990s.  “We’re very excited about our inaugural year,” says Johnson, “and we’re confident in our ability to run a well organized, event focused show.  We’ve already committed to 3 years worth of show dates and look forward to extending our stay in Milwaukee indefinitely.”

Nexus Game Fair has already signed a number of industry special guests, including Jolly Blackburn (Knights of the Dinner Table), Mike Carr (Dawn Patrol), Chris Clark (Inner City Games Designs), Bob Coggins (Napoleon’s Battles), Dave “Zeb” Cook (Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd Edition), Jeff Easley (Staff Artist, TSR, Inc.), Todd Fisher (Revolution & Empire), Matt Forbeck (Deadlands), Ernie Gygax (Gygax Magazine), Tim Kask (Dragon Magazine), Dave Kenzer (Hackmaster), James Lowder (Author, Prince of Lies), Frank Mentzer (Dungeons & Dragons Basic Set), Merle Rasmussen (Top Secret), Jim Ward (Gamma World), Skip Williams (Dungeons & Dragons 3rd Edition) and more.

“We’re not just providing our attendees with the chance to personally meet these prestigious industry notables,” says Johnson, “but also to game with them.  Nexus Game Fair is committed to offering a variety of high quality events to our attendees.  We’ve partnered with demo and organized play teams from several industry leading companies, including Paizo’s Pathfinder Society and Catalyst Game Studios’ Shadowrun Missions, in order to bring a phenomenal array of events to our show.”

New York Times best-selling author Frank Beddor (Looking Glass Wars trilogy) recently launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the publishing of his Hatter M graphic novel series and his latest prose series for fans of the LGW mythos.

Hatter M, Volume 5: Love of Wonder will be the FINAL graphic novel in the award-winning Hatter M Series and available to Kickstarter backers FIRST.

The campaign has been 20% funded in less then 24 hours from launch! Visit http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/149372651/the-looking-glass-wars-hatter-m to participate.

In addition, fans asked for another prose series from Frank and the result is Volume 1 of Looking Glass Wars: Millinery Academy.

Discover a young Hatter Madigan as a cadet attending the fabled Millinery Academy where he is trained to protect Wonderland’s Queens.

Beddor commented “It’s a great time to be creative, and I am so lucky to have such a remarkable platform to bring new work to life.”

LOOKING GLASS WARS: MILLINERY ACADEMY

Swordplay! Newfound friendships! School bullies! Budding love! Self-serving rivals! Scheming adults and soulless rebel plotters! Welcome to the world of Cadet Hatter Madigan, who has just entered Wonderland’s Millinery academy as one of the freshmen ‘Brims’. Those born to be Royal Bodyguards are trained at one of the four academies(Heart, Clubs Diamond, Spade) linked to the royal houses. Cadets will study the mystic and martial arts, as well as the sometimes more difficult art of successfully dealing with others. Once Hatter begins his training he is thrown into a competitive world of both boys and girls vying to be the best. Arsenal cubes, blade chasers and Hat blocking 101 are all rites of passage the young milliners first take on together but must eventually perfect, separately.

HATTER M: LOVE OF WONDER

In the 5th and final volume, looking glasses shatter as our worlds collide and characters from Wonderland increasingly cross over to aid or block Hatter in his single-minded quest to find Alyss and bring her home. Redd’s Black Imagination has ruled Wonderland for 13 years without fear of reprisal and now the specter of Alyss’ return to claim the throne has unleashed a storm of paranoiac rage. Hatter Madigan is at the center of this crusade as he must simultaneously battle the enemies of wonder as well as his own beliefs and loyalties. All paths through time and space, through blood and steel, from his world to our world, have led Hatter Madigan to this moment — a life or death confrontation with the only warrior in the Looking Glass Wars universe capable of defeating him and destroying the love of wonder.

Sci-fi/fantasy anthology, Other Worlds, Debuts at Rose City Comic Con, Sept 21-22

A Wave Blue World and Bricker-Down Productions are pleased to announce the release of their latest anthology, Other Worlds, a compilation of sci-fi, monster, and experimental comic one-shots by writer/creator Justin Zimmerman, featuring the artwork of Mike Lawrence as well as a variety of other incredible, independent talents. Hailed as “ingenious” by Giant Fire Breathing Robot and “unpretentious, simple, elegant and enjoyable” by Comics Forge, Other Worlds will premiere in print at the Rose City Comic Con on September 21st and 22nd after its digital release on ComiXology in early September. Fans can find the book at the con at Booth #728.

Artist Mike Lawrence, currently drawing an upcoming graphic novel for AMP!, headlines the book, contributing the cover and three interior stories done in a range of media from charcoal to watercolor and inked work. Mike enjoyed working on the anthology, but it was his collaboration with the book’s creator that he found particularly satisfying. “Justin is an extremely versatile writer,” says Mike. “The book has something for everyone, from robo-librarians to alien bugs, and Justin can do it all.”

Other artists who’ve contributed to the anthology include the up-and-coming talents of Grace Allison, who’s worked for both IDW and Monkey Brain, and Tym Godek, Russ Brown, Matt Grisgby and Terry Blas.

A Wave Blue World publisher, Tyler Chin-Tanner says, “While comics certainly have their fair share of recycled space battles and monsters, it’s altogether too rare to find stories that captivate our imagination and appeal to our sense of wonder like those found in Other Worlds.”

For more information about Other Worlds, please contact Tyler Chin-Tanner at tyler@awaveblueworld.com.

Or visit www.awaveblueworld.com, or find Other Worlds on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/awaveblueworld.

Arcana Comics is thrilled to announce a special partnership with Award Winning Actor, Director, and Producer, Bill Paxton (HATFIELDS & McCOYS, BIG LOVE, TITANIC), who is bringing us Seven Holes For Air, an engrossing and entertaining celebration of an iconic Western hero’s battle with forces beyond his control.

Written by John J. McLauchlin with art from Mick Reinman, 7 Holes for Air introduces us to Bob Rourke, the kind of man they don’t make anymore. He’s a tough son of a bitch; a fifty-year-old steelworker who smokes, drinks, and never complains, even when he’s in pain.

When Bob is facing the end, disease ravaging his body, he soldiers on at home, at work, and in an alternate Spaghetti Western reality in which his real-life antagonists become actual villains.

Last night while looking up info on the 2012 DA14, I came across a YouTube video of what was supposedly a meteoric fireball streaking over Russia. I thought about posting it but I couldn’t find any time stamp info on it and there wasn’t anything else on a Russia Fireball online at the time, so I dismissed it. I woke up today and started checking on the Asteroid updates and low and behold there really WAS a meteor in Russian Skies. The YouTube video was legit.

It streaked across the sky in Russia’s Ural Mountains causing damage to buildings and injuring hundreds (some reports say thousands) of people from flying debris caused by a series of sonic booms. So far 3 impact sites have been discovered.

Am I the only one who’s remembering “Night of the Comet” over this? 😛

From NASA:

NASA Television will provide commentary starting at 11 a.m. PST (2 p.m. EST) on Friday, Feb. 15, during the close, but safe, flyby of a small near-Earth asteroid named 2012 DA14. NASA places a high priority on tracking asteroids and protecting our home planet from them. This flyby will provide a unique opportunity for researchers to study a near-Earth object up close.

The half-hour broadcast from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., will incorporate real-time animation to show the location of the asteroid in relation to Earth, along with live or near real-time views of the asteroid from observatories in Australia, weather permitting.

At the time of its closest approach to Earth at approximately 11:25 a.m. PST (2:25 p.m. EST / 19:25 UTC), the asteroid will be about 17,150 miles (27,600 kilometers) above Earth’s surface. The commentary will be available via NASA TV and streamed live online at: * http://www.nasa.gov/ntv * and http://www.ustream.tv/nasajpl2.

This past November, Two NASA astronomers suggested that the size and location of an asteroid belt, shaped by the evolution of the sun’s planet-forming disk and by the gravitational influence of a nearby giant Jupiter-like planet, may determine whether complex life will evolve on an Earth-like planet.
