Billie the Unicorn

from Immedium:

Billie the Unicorn

“I am madly in love with Brianne Drouhard’s art right now. She is an illustrator and character designer, most notably she worked on Teen Titans and The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. If you enjoy her art you should check out her new book Billie the Unicorn which looks hella cute… Her style is really flexible, and reminds me of what might happen if adorable manga styled art and the art of Ren & Stimpy’s John K. had a magical baby.” — The Uniblog

VIZ Media’s “Naoki Urasawa’s 20th Century Boys” Wins a 2011 Eisner Award

from VIZ Media:

VIZ Media, LLC (VIZ Media), the largest distributor and licensor of anime and manga in North America, is proud to announce that Naoki Urasawa’s 20th Century Boys was recognized with an Eisner Award in the Best U.S. Edition of International Material — Asia category during award ceremonies held at the recent Comic-Con International event in San Diego, CA. Naoki Urasawa’s 20th Century Boys is published in North America by VIZ Media’s Signature imprint. Volume 17 of the series will be released in August.

20th Century Boys is the story of a group of boys who try to save the world. Humanity, having faced extinction at the end of the 20th century, would not have entered the new millennium if it weren’t for them. In 1969, during their youth, they created a symbol. In 1997, as the coming disaster slowly starts to unfold, that symbol returns.

For Kenji, a simple convenience store manager who once dreamed of becoming a rock ‘n’ roll musician, a host of memories from his past come rushing back when one of his childhood friends mysteriously commits suicide. Could this new death be related to the rise of a bizarre new cult that’s been implicated in several other murders and disappearances? Determined to dig deeper, Kenji reunites with some of his old buddies in the hope of learning the truth behind it all.

“We’re elated to have Naoki Urasawa’s 20th Century Boys recognized by the comic book industry such a prestigious award,” says Andy Nakatani, Editorial Director at VIZ Media and editor for the title. “Urasawa’s tense and dramatic storylines have firmly established him among the very top echelon of manga creators. With this, and other acclaimed series such as Naoki Urasawa’s Monster and Pluto: Urasawa x Tezuka, Naoki Urasawa continues to push the boundaries of the manga genre, and we look forward to this award bringing his work to the attention of many new fans across North America.”

The Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards are considered the “Oscars” of the comic book industry and are named for renowned cartoonist Will Eisner (creator of The Spirit and several award-winning graphic novels). The awards are handed out each year in a gala ceremony at Comic-Con International in San Diego, the largest and oldest comic book convention in the United
States.

Naoki Urasawa’s career as a manga artist spans more than twenty years and has firmly established him as one of the true manga masters of Japan. Born in Tokyo in 1960, Urasawa debuted with Beta!! in 1983 and hasn’t stopped his impressive output since. Well-versed in a variety of genres, Urasawa’s oeuvre encompasses a multitude of different subjects, such as a romantic comedy (Yawara! A Fashionable Judo Girl), a suspenseful human drama about a former mercenary (Pineapple ARMY; story by Kazuya Kudo), a captivating psychological suspense story (Naoki Urasawa’s Monster), a sci-fi adventure manga (Naoki Urasawa’s 20th Century Boys), and a modern reinterpretation of the work of the God of Manga, Osamu Tezuka (Pluto: Urasawa x Tezuka; co-authored with Takashi Nagasaki, supervised by Macoto Tezka, and with the cooperation of Tezuka Productions). Many of his books have spawned popular animated and live-action TV programs and films, and 2008 saw the theatrical release of the first of three live-action Japanese films based on Naoki Urasawa’s 20th Century Boys.

No stranger to accolades and awards, Urasawa is a three-time recipient of the prestigious Shogakukan Manga Award, a two-time recipient of the Osamu Tezuka Cultural Prize, and has received the Kodansha Manga Award. Urasawa has also become involved in the world of academia, and in 2008 accepted a guest teaching post at Nagoya Zokei University, where he teaches courses in, of course, manga.

Arcana Comics is Excited to announce a couple of special appearances at the Arcana Comics Panel on Thursday evening!

From Arcana Comics:

San Diego Comic Con is a mecca for talent across the entertainment industry. It’s no different this year with the news that Alexa Vega, talented actress from the Spy Kids franchise and many other roles, and Jesse McCartney, platinum selling recording artist, actor, and voice talent will both make a special appearance during the Arcana Comics Panel from 6:00 – 7:00 PM, Thursday, July 21st in room 23ABC.

Alexa Vega and Jesse McCartney are two of the stars in the upcoming 3-D luximation animated film, THE CLOCKWORK GIRL, based on the Arcana Comics graphic novel by Sean Patrick O’Reilly and Kevin Hanna.

In the timeless land of Haraway, a robot girl, Tesla (ALEXA VEGA), is given the gift of life from her creator, Wilhelm the Tinkerer. Tesla meets Huxley (JESSE MCCARTNEY), the monster boy, who happens to be the son of her creator’s chief rival. Together the two break into – and out of – ancient fortresses, fight robots, and travel from the depths of the ocean to the skies above as they attempt to solve the mystery of the plague that has stricken their town.

The 3-D luximation animated film also features the voice talents of Carrie-Anne Moss (THE MATRIX), Jeffrey Tambor (ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT), Brad Garrett (EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND), and Adrian Hough (MORTAL KOMBAT: LEGACY) amongst others.

THE CLOCKWORK GIRL (ISBN:9780062080394) was recently re-released by Harper Collins with a new forward by creators Sean Patrick O’Reilly and Kevin Hanna, along with playful, full-page pin-ups of the characters.

Clockwork Girl, Arcana’s slate of interactive apps, and more. See how independent publishers make their mark in the comic book industry and blur the lines between mediums, Arcana style. Attendees will get free comics and the first in a series of Arcana Universe posters.

Don’t miss the book Mark Waid (DAREDEVIL, IRREDEEMABLE) describes as “Energetic, dynamic art and a great story.”

We are also debuting the first ARCANA UNIVERSE POSTER and several new titles, which haven’t hit the stands yet.

Arcana Comics is Debuting Becoming at SDCC, written by acclaimed creator Brooke Burgess (BROKEN SAINTS)!

From Arcana Comics:

Brook Burgess, creator of the animated epic, Broken Saints, is releasing his debut Arcana comic at San Diego Comic Con, starting on Wednesday, July 20th, where he will appear throughout the week alongside the artist of Becoming, Dane Cypel. Please refer to the updated signing schedule below for the latest signings.

Of his decision to work with Arcana, Brooke explains, “I was approached by Sean back in 2004, after finishing the original Flash motion comic Broken Saints and producing the 4-disc DVD upgrade of the series with Telefilm Canada.  I had no idea there was such a prolific independent comic publisher in Canada, and was impressed with his savvy in developing original IP and packaging concepts for TV, film, and other media.”

At SDCC 2005, Brooke signed a deal with “20th Century Fox to distribute Broken Saints worldwide, which was an amazing opportunity.  It was launched the following year in San Diego, and Sean was one of the first to swing by and offer congratulations and support!  Arcana was growing by leaps and bounds by then, and I knew he had several feature films in development.  I wanted to start writing a new story asap, but some other motion comic projects – Will Smith’s I Am Legend, and Guillermo Del Toro’s Hellboy – owned my life for the next year+.”

Since that time, Brooke has written two films, which are in development, and consulted with various transmedia campaigns. Early in 2010, he pitched BECOMING, “a psychological thriller for mature readers,” to Sean. The story was “based on a short film script a friend of mine and I had concocted – an almost ‘operatic’ battle of wills between an aging psychology professor and a cocky graduate student – and I was really intrigued by its graphic novel potential.   I’ve always been drawn to stories where the protagonist is on a quest for ‘knowledge’, and Becoming asks a crucial question:  is there such a thing as ‘ultimate knowledge’…and what’s the price for it?  The story’s witty, macabre, intense, philosophical, very personal…and even a little funny, in an absurd way.”

Arcana is excited to be working with the talented creator and to have him appearing at SDCC.
