the Familiar — A New Dark Comedy Film from Kody Zimmermann

I am a huge jPod fan and, as such, I have made an effort to stay on top of the careers of the brilliant actors who starred in the short-lived, sorely missed television series. Whenever possible, I do what I can to help spread the good word for these talented young folks. Through their exploits, I’ve stumbled upon many wonderful shows that I may not have otherwise had a chance to see. Recently, I discovered that Torrance Coombs (John Doe on jPod) was starring in a new short film. The trailer (which isn’t available to embed yet so you’ll just have to follow the link to see it) tweaked my interest.

Sam has always been obsessed with vampires — from the time he was a child watching them on children’s programs, to when he was a college student reading horror novels on the side. On Sam’s 21st birthday, a mysterious gentleman offers him a peculiar career choice: become an assistant to a real-life Vampire. Intrigued and enthusiastic, Sam takes the job and meets Simon Bolivar, a 400-year old Vampire. Everything about the Vampire does hold some truth to it; a truth followed by a dose of hard-reality. Sam soon realizes that it is not so pleasant to serve his corrupt and neurotic behavior. Told from Sam’s point of view, the Familiar is for anyone who has ever pursued a dream only to watch it slowly twist into an unrecognizable nightmare. Be careful what you wish for… it may come back to bite you in the end!

I commented on the video and the Familiar creator Kody Zimmermann and I started chatting. After he shared some background info on the show, I was downright intrigued.

I’ve worked in Vancouver’s film industry for 13 years now with a long string of job titles, most containing the word “assistant” in them. Once, I was an assistant to a Hollywood actor. Someone whose work I admired, an artist who took his craft serious. But what unfolded was three months of sleepless nights, insane requests and an endless glimpse into the more shallow recesses of humanity. I started empathizing with the Renfield character in Bram Stoker’s Dracula; just another dutiful lunatic serving the will of a bigger evil.

Familiars — like Renfield — are spoken of in vampire myths. But like real-life assistants, not many people pay them any attention. But still, they compelled me. What kind of person would actually serve a life-sucking fiend? I guess anyone who complains about Mondays or is guilted into working the weekend kind of knows that answer already.

My story was found.

Aiding me on this journey was my good friend/collaborator Riley Walsh. Our mantra was to do it as cheap as possible while maintaining some form of professional integrity. We were both unemployed guys with mortgages hoping we could get a helping hand from friends and contacts. What we received was humbling; a true testament to how generous and gracious this industry can treat its own.

We conscripted Jennifer Nick as our co-producer; she got us audition space at the Men in Trees production office, spear-headed our festival circuit campaign and started researching funding grants. Riley approached Mark Freeborn (production designer of Final Destination III and X-Files II) to advise us on our design strategy. Mark and his team went beyond our expectations, introducing us to production designer Alistair Bell, giving us a literal ton of construction flats and then building our sets with them.

Riley procured a very generous Grip and Lighting package from William F Whites, a Sony F-900 camera package from Sim Video, a sound stage at North Shore Studios as well as enlisting the help of Sharpe Sound Studios for a professional sound mix pro bono. A crew of industry vets heeded our call for help: people who usually get paid $600-700 a day were coming out for us for free to do a five day gig.

What’s more, our cast was amazing. Torrance Coombs of The Tudors and jPod became our main character, Sam. The vampire was Paul Hubbard, more known as Ford’s “Random Celebrity Guy.” We had a great ensemble with Rachel Sehl, Luisa Jojic, Brock Shoveller and Art Kitching who did double-duty as our Nosferatu and a victimized Jogger.

We shot our first two days in Stage 8 at North Shore Studios, a place I went to for 4 years as an office assistant. It was exhilarating to go there in a director’s capacity. The Taylor Manor, a local film friendly and empty old hospital, acted as our vampire den for the next two days. Our last day was spent in a couple of shops in North Vancouver, ending along a picturesque boardwalk with the Vancouver cityscape as our backdrop. I was grinning ear-to-ear watching our vampire sucking blood and stealing some dead guy’s pants. It’s a rush to see something you wrote down on a computer happening right there in real life.

Riley and I set out to take this a step beyond the usual limitations we’re accustomed to. We wanted to make a feature film within the short format. I guess when no one is handing you that chance, you go out and make your own luck.

I think we got it.

With all the “romantic” rewriting of vampires in books, films and television these days, it’s nice to see someone showing the bloodsuckers as the bad guys they are supposed to be. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a fan of the sultry vampire (Frank Langella was smolderingly sexy even to my 8-year-old self when I watched him in Dracula for the first time) but today’s vampires are shallow and pose no true threat or danger. Getting bit by today’s vampires is like getting a hickey — it’s unsightly, but no real harm done, and there’s no stigma attached to it.

The modern creatures are empty and untormented the way the traditional vampire used to be. There were, after all, two kinds: the monster and the victim. When I think of vampires, I always remember the lines from Sting’s “Moon over Bourbon Street”: “It was many years ago that I became what I am. I was trapped in this life like an innocent lamb…” and “I have stood many times outside her window at night to struggle with my instinct in the pale moon light. How could I be this way and I pray to God above. I must love what I destroy and destroy the thing I love…”

So, here’s the Familiar, a regular guy who buys into the whole modern concept of how cool vampires are and learns his lesson the hard way that giving up being human could also mean giving up your humanity. I can’t wait to see this show, and you can be sure I’ll be posting the trailer as soon as it’s available.

Atlantean Swim Technology from FINIS

Geeks oftentimes lead a rather sedentary lifestyle, sitting in front of the computer all day, but, as the Wii Fit has proved, entertaining gadgetry and technology is all that’s needed to lure them into the world of physical activity. FINIS, “The Worldwide Leader in Technical Swimming Development”, goes a step further, enticing the computer generation away from the simulated activity that video games offer for some real life sport using swim gear that looks like it was designed in Atlantis.

Recreation Monofins
Recreation Monofins

Monofins turn exercise into a cosplay or role-playing experience beneath the waves. Fusing traditional flippers into one large fin with joined foot pockets, the Monofin is designed to enhance the dolphin kick, a technique in competitive swimming that resembles the undulating tail motion of a mermaid. It allows users to “swim fast and fun like a dolphin”, while channeling their inner Ariel or Neptune. There are three recreation level Monofins, the Wave Monofin (shoe size 1-7; all FINIS products are universally sized using standard male sizing), Tempo Monofin (shoe sizes 4-7), and Rapid Monofin (shoe size 1-7). The flexibility of the fin blade decreases with each size, providing a more challenging workout to the muscles of your lower back, abdomen, buttocks and quadriceps. If you find yourself in water that’s a bit deeper than you are tall, the Monofin’s blade is rigid enough that you can use it to stand on tip-toe rather than expend energy treading water. The foot pockets are soft and comfortable, with release-clip straps to adjust them to your exact foot size, and a safety mechanism for quick foot release. For those used to regular flippers, the Monofin feels quite strange at first, since your legs are locked together, but adaptation is remarkably quick. It’s easy to imagine, once you’ve gotten the hang of skimming along in a Monofin, that your legs really have transformed into a tail, especially when you dive sharply downwards and the fin briefly clears the water in iconic mermaid fashion, coming down with a satisfying slap on the water’s surface.

Watch the FINIS Monofins instructional video to see the Monofin in action. It’ll reassure any guys afraid of looking silly that mertails aren’t just for girls!

Mermaid Tail Girls
Mermaid Tail Girls

The Mermaid & Shark Tail Swim Fins (male shoe size 1-7, female shoe size 1 – 8-1/2) are for little swimmers not yet ready to transition to the full-sized Wave Monofin. This play fin will “make fantasy a reality” while it “builds confidence in the water during playtime”. The fin blade is quite a bit smaller than the Wave Monofin’s, making it easier for children to maneuver. It’s made from soft plastic and TPR (Thermo Plastic Rubber), so the foot pocket, which has a simpler slip-on design than the more fitted style of the adult Monofins, is very comfortable, as is the padded band of fabric that holds the feet in place with an adjustable velcro strap. Intended for ages 6-12, with a year or more of swimming experience, the fin should only be used with adult supervision. Despite the kid-friendly foot strap, children will still need help in and out of the pool. Unless the child is lowered into the water, the fin needs to be put on after entering the water since it hampers walking movement, and if the pool doesn’t have a set of wide stairs in the shallow end to sit on while slipping out of the tail, then someone will need to haul fledgling mermaids and sharks onto the deck. The entire fin weighs less than two pounds and also floats, so if kids become separated from their fin in the lake or ocean, you won’t have to worry about it sinking straight down to Davy Jones’ locker, never to be seen again.

If you have sensitive feet, add a layer of protection by wearing Skin Socks with the Monofin to keep the plastic from rubbing directly on skin and causing chafing or blisters. Skin Socks, available in either royal blue or black, are made from a thin nylon/lycra material but are great protection when you’re at the beach and need to cross a scorching expanse of sand to reach the water. They’re also good for avoiding the germs inherent in public pool showers, decks, or while doing aqua aerobics. A pair of goggles is also a recommended accessory when speeding through the water with a Monofin. The Revolution goggles have anti-fog and UV protection built into each polycarbonate lens, and are streamlined and micro-adjustable, which means that you can change both the strap length and nose bridge width for a perfect fit. The iridescent lenses of the Clear/Multi-Mirror style give a striking, alien look to eyes, and will protect your eyes while still being extremely comfortable and fashionable. Alternatively, the larger Energy, FINIS’s “most comfortable soft-frame adult goggle”, is ideal for any face shape, has curved lenses that reduce the distortion of looking through water, and is so light and inobtrusive that you won’t even remember you’re wearing goggles.

SwiMP3
SwiMP3

Video games aren’t complete without an epic soundtrack, and FINIS allows you to transfer this gaming element to the live-action arena with the SwiMP3, a unique waterproof MP3 player that uses bone conduction, a technology that is explained in the SwiMP3 instructional video. “Because the SwiMP3 uses bone conduction,” FINIS says, “the sound vibrations are able to be directly transferred from the cheek bone to the inner ear, giving the swimmer the ultimate sensory experience.” Just load up the SwiMP3 with music that’s evocative of underwater fantasy and clip it onto your goggles before diving into your next aquatic adventure. The player’s two halves, where the on/off, volume, next/previous track, pause, and shuffle buttons are located, rest against your cheekbones. It’s best to memorize the configuration of the buttons before going swimming, so you don’t have to fiddle around and learn them by trial and error. For the most impressive introduction to the SwiMP3, turn the player on while your head is still above water, then slowly submerge. The sound quality, quite good in the air when compared to a regular MP3 player with earbuds, suddenly becomes crystal clear the moment your ears dip below the water. It’s a thrilling shock to hear stereo-quality sound in an aquatic environment. Coldplay’s song “Clocks” is pure magic underwater, and Enya’s “Orinoco Flow” and the bubbly songs from The Little Mermaid would make great SwiMP3 tracks, as well. Listening to music underwater without the muffled playback of waterproof players that rely on air or water sound transmission is a truly amazing experience, and because earphones are unnecessary with bone conduction it’s possible to carry on normal conversations with fellow swimmers while listening to your tunes. If the volume is turned high enough, anyone within several feet of you will be able to share in the fun, as the sound carries quite a distance. The SwiMP3 is compatible with Windows and Mac, and at 256 MB you can drag-and-drop about 60 MP3 or WMA files into its playlist. A rechargeable lithium-ion battery charges directly from your computer’s USB port and provides up to eight hours of play. FINIS’s SwiMP3 will keep swimming enthusiasts in the water until they develop webbed fingers and gills.

Track your vitals with FINIS’s new Aqua Pulse, a bone-conduction heart rate monitor. It works in and out of the water, so in addition to listening to your heartbeats while swimming, you can wear the Aqua Pulse while doing step-ups on the Wii Balance Board, or to determine just how fast your heart races during a World of Warcraft raid. The Aqua Pulse will be available the first week of September.

The film is notably narrated by Aoi Miyazaki, an up-and-coming Japanese actress who appeared in the acclaimed manga-inspired film Nana (VIZ Pictures). Yoshitomo Nara’s work has captured the attention of the international art world and his cartoon-like girl images with characteristic big heads, chubby-faces and slanted eyes have become icons of the artist’s style. The people, the experience, and the works of art all come together in this film and culminate in the grand opening of the AtoZ exhibit. Art aficionados as well as fans of Japanese culture will delight in this intimate portrait of one of the most talented modern pop artists working today.”

from VIZ Cinema:

NEW PEOPLE, a dynamic entertainment destination bringing the latest examples of Japanese popular culture to North American shores, presents a very special world premiere, the final chapter of the 20th Century Boys trilogy of live-action films — 20th Century Boys 3: Redemption — this Friday, August 28th at the newly opened VIZ Cinema located in the heart of San Francisco’s historic Japantown. The special world premiere will take place simultaneously with the theatrical release of the film in Japan and will continue to play at the venue through September 3rd. For schedule and ticket information, please visit vizcinema.com.

The 20th Century Boys film trilogy is based on a critically-acclaimed manga (graphic novel) series created by Naoki Urasawa that was a national phenomenon in Japan, selling over 24 million copies. Excitement and anticipation for the release of the final chapter has built steadily from fans because the ending of the film is markedly different from the original manga series that inspired it.

VIZ Cinema is the nation’s first movie theatre devoted exclusively to Japanese film and anime. The 143-seat subterranean theatre is located in the basement of the NEW PEOPLE building and features plush seating, digital as well as 35mm projection, and a THX-certified sound system. 20th Century Boys 1: Beginning of the End plays at VIZ Cinema until August 27th (matinee only), while 20th Century Boys 2: The Last Hope runs through August 28th.

Directed by Yukihiko Tsutsumi and presented in partnership with Nippon Television, the 20th Century Boys saga begins in 1969 when a young boy named Kenji and his friends write The Book of Prophecy. In the book, they write about a future where they fight against an evil organization trying to take over the world and bring about Doomsday. Years later in 1997, a mysterious cult being led by a man only known as “Friend” has emerged and gained strong influence over society. A series of catastrophic events begin to occur, mirroring the prophecies made up by the young Kenji.

Now in 2019, could the catastrophe written in The New Book of Prophecy be happening for real? What’s the true purpose of Friend’s evil plan? Who’s the real savior that will stand up against him?

In the final film, the year is Friend Era Year 3 (2017 A.D.) and the World President, Friend, rules humanity. After a deadly virus ravages Tokyo, a wall is built around the city and inhabitants’ lives have been severely restricted. Friend tells everyone that on August 20th, aliens will destroy mankind and only those who believe in him will be saved. But a movement to stop Friend is in motion. Is protagonist Kenji really still alive? What is Friend’s plan for August 20th? Will the mystery behind the true identity of Friend be uncovered? All of the prophecies, schemes and plans will be finally revealed in the saga’s exciting concluding chapter.

NEW PEOPLE offers the latest films, art, fashion and retail brands from Japan and is the creative vision of the J-Pop Center Project and VIZ Pictures, a distributor and producer of Japanese live action film. VIZ Media, LLC (VIZ Media), one of the entertainment industry’s most innovative and comprehensive publishing, animation and licensing companies, has announced the North American debut of the new steampunk/action manga series Tegami Bachi: Letter Bee on September 1st. The series, rated “T” for Teens, will be published under the company’s Shonen Jump imprint and will carry an MSRP of $7.99 U.S. / $9.50 CAN.

In a land of perpetual night, your heart is your light.

Amberground is locked in darkness. A man-made star casts only a dim light over the land. The pitch-black wilderness is infested with Gaichuu — colossal insects with metal exoskeletons. The Gaichuu make travel between the cities of Amberground extremely dangerous. But thankfully the Letter Bees, a brave corps of messengers, risk their lives in order to keep the hearts of Amberground connected.

Letter Bee first appeared in the pages of Monthly Shonen Jump magazine in Japan and is presently featured in Jump SQ.
