Nintendo Invites Fans to Celebrate 25 Years of “Super Mario Bros.” Fun

from Nintendo of Canada:

Twenty-five years ago today, Nintendo’s original Super Mario Bros. video game made its debut in Japan and changed the world of video games forever. Since then, Mario has become one of the most renowned and beloved video game characters around the globe.

Mario is all but synonymous with Nintendo. It’s difficult to think of one without thinking of the other. Super Mario Bros. contains a magical blend of characters, graphics, challenges, music and action that still captivates players today. The original game sold 40.24 million units worldwide, and remains one of the best-known, best-loved video games in the world. It popularized the side-scrolling format and established elements of the Mushroom Kingdom that are still used in today’s Mario games. Super Mario Bros. frequently appears on lists of the best games of all time.

“Stimulated by advancements in technologies, we have always enjoyed developing the Super Mario Bros. series,” said Nintendo designer and Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto. “The Super Mario Bros. series has always taken advantage of the latest technologies and is the fruit of the creativity of a number of my hard-working friends working as a team.”

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Super Mario Bros., fans can visit mario25th.nintendo.com to see a special video that shows game-play footage from Super Mario Bros. all the way through Super Mario Galaxy 2. Send in the CLONES! The transformative third season of “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” launches with a new look at the series’ everyman heroes!

from StarWars.com:

The war wears on, and the Republic is pushed to its breaking point. Support for the Jedi Knights and their noble cause comes in the form of valiant clone troopers — steadfast defenders of peace and justice, even as the Jedi falter and the mighty Republic begins to crumble. Joined by familiar faces and confronted with deadly new threats, these everyman heroes lead the charge into a transformative new season of Clone Wars adventures — where alliances will be tested, truths will be questioned and galaxy-changing secrets will be uncovered to shake the very foundations of the Star Wars universe. The next chapter of Star Wars: The Clone Wars begins with a must-see two-part premiere, airing at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT Friday, September 17 on Cartoon Network.

In “Clone Cadets,” five headstrong cadets — Hevy, Cutup, Droidbait, Fives and Echo — struggle to complete their training on the ocean planet of Kamino. Unable to work together as a team, they must learn to embrace their future as soldiers before they are drummed out of the academy.

“It’s a band-of-brothers story that takes you back before most of the episodes we’ve seen so far; it’s one of the earliest episodes — chronologically — in the series,” says Dee Bradley Baker, voice of the clones. “We’re going to see how the ‘shinies’ [new recruits featured in the first season episode, ‘Rookies’] learn to work together. Starting off, they’re not a team at all. They’re just everymen; they’re human. And now they’ve got to pull it together. There’s something really cool about how the show brings out the heroism from characters like that — not just the superpowered ones.”

A revealing look at clone development and training, the episode also introduces a unique new character. Clone Number 99 is a unique clone — an imperfect model relegated to menial, custodial duties at the Kamino production facility. Still, despite his physical flaws, he nonetheless identifies with his genetic brethren — and he aspires to make his own small contributions to their noble war efforts.

“He’s a great example of the show’s creative risks,” says Baker. “I was nervous going into this episode. Does he sound real? Is he believable? I agonized over it; he’s a very special character, and a very unique challenge. Kinda high stakes for me, because I wanted so badly to get it right. He’s a little bit slower… quieter… softer than your basic clone voice. I skewed his dialect toward cockney to give him a blue collar, salt-of-the-earth flavor. I’ve got a lot of favorites, but 99’s definitely one of them. His story is very affecting — really beautiful on a lot of different levels.”

On the heels of “Clone Cadets” comes “ARC Troopers,” which revisits the clones after the notable events of “Rookies” — with the surviving squad members tasked with defending Kamino from a large-scale Separatist attack. After the Republic repulses the Separatists’ first assault, the real threat begins. Asajj Ventress, General Grievous and an army of droids rise out of the planet’s oceans, determined to destroy the clone production facilities — and the clones themselves are the last line of desperate defense.

“This episode raises the stakes in a really spectacular way. This is big space opera; this is why you want to own an HD TV. It’s basically the scale of a Star Wars movie — on TV,” says Baker. “It’s awesome. I’m so very proud of this show; it’s exciting to make this kind of episode work. And it’s such a team effort. There’s an army of artists working to make this compelling and moving. This is extraordinary storytelling.”

And it’s just the beginning. In a galaxy far, far away… much to learn there still is.

Nintendo Asks the Public’s Help to Save London from Peril

from Nintendo of Canada:

London is in trouble and only Professor Layton can help! The popular series of portable games featuring Professor Layton has built a reputation for fun puzzles woven into the context of a mystery. Sunday marked the launch of the third game in the series, Professor Layton and the Unwound Future, made exclusively for the Nintendo DS family of systems. The game launches just as the Nintendo DSi suggested retail price has dropped to $149.99 and the Nintendo DSi XL suggested retail price has dropped to $169.99.

In Professor Layton and the Unwound Future, Professor Layton’s apprentice, Luke, gets a letter from himself — from 10 years in the future. Future Luke explains how London has fallen into disarray, and requests the aid of Professor Layton to set things right. By solving more than 165 puzzles, riddles and brain teasers, players must help the pair solve the mystery. Professor Layton and the Unwound Future includes more voice acting and more animated sequences than any game in the series.

“Everyone likes to solve a puzzle and unravel a mystery,” said Ron Bertram, Nintendo of Canada’s vice-president and general manager. “Professor Layton games deliver more of this kind of entertainment than any other series. Even better, they put it right in the palm of your hand.”

To celebrate the launch of the game, Nintendo hosted just-for-fun puzzle challenges in four U.S. cities to determine whether “ladies” or “gents” were better at solving puzzles. Predictions for the events can been seen in a fun video at professorlaytonds.com. The gents ultimately claimed victory, but the razor-thin margin has officials wondering whether a more decisive rematch may be called for. The results of this thoroughly unscientific survey are as follows (numbers indicate average scores):

San Francisco — Ladies: 14.3, Gents: 12.06
Chicago — Ladies: 10.4, Gents: 12.4
Boston — Ladies: 7.3, Gents: 6.0
Philadelphia — Ladies: 4.62, Gents: 8.4
TOTAL — Ladies: 9.1, Gents: 9.7

Remember that Nintendo DSi features parental controls that let adults manage the content their children can access. For more information about this and other features, visit nintendodsi.com.

ThinkGeek rocks the coin-op & takes $10 off

from ThinkGeek:

Greetings, Literate Beings of Earth!

What a busy weekend! We sent Timmy clones to Dragon*Con and PAX and then it was off to the outer rim to pick up the latest shipment from the Hoth Department of Natural Resources. After that, a quick joy ride in the DeLorean to the coin-op Golden Age, and on the way home we fought a Balrog for some barware (souvenirs, you know).

At least we had something to read on the trip: the Hugo Award winners were announced at AussieCon 4. Props to them and thanks for making this plane of existence a little more existable!

Retro Atari Wall Decals
Live the game, and make it old school. Back in the day, when ancient geeks wanted to get their game on, it required pockets laden with coins, a good belt to prevent said laden pants from falling off, and a journey to a magical place called an arcade. In this darkened room were monoliths that bleeped and blooped and glowed with pixelated goodness. Ah, the halcyon days before game-quality was measured in voxels! Everything was simple, but still fun. Were you there, friend? Remember those days with vinyl decals that make your living space look like the games you loved. Fill your room with Asteroids, Centipede or Pong, no quarters necessary. Atari represent! All that’s missing is the coin slot.

$10 off your $30+ order with code PONG
Having these Atari Wall Graphics around is making us all nostalgic for the days when the world was simpler. You were a bunch of squares shooting squares at other squares. If you lean back in your ergonomic desk chair and reminisce about days of yore, use code PONG for $10 off a $30 order, good through 9/10/10 at 11:59 PM ET.
