New Titles Coming Soon from “RiffTrax”: “The Crater Lake Monster” and “The Devil’s Hand”

from RiffTrax:

Are you a giant, cheaply-made monster looking for a nice place to terrorize? Your search is over: Crater Lake is the spot for you! Get your limp rubbery body down here, you’ll be feasting on mustachioed creeps quicker than you can say “AaaUUurgghh, I’m a monster!!” This small, sleepy community has everything you’re looking for. A sheriff who will refuse to believe in you until it’s too late. Uptight scientists that DO believe in you, for the sheriff to ignore. A pair of drunken hicks to provide aimless, misguided comic relief, and also be ignored by the sheriff. All this, and random unlikable tourists for you to snack on along the way! Just avoid choking to death on all the hideous 1970s facial hair, and you’ll have the time of your life.

Mike, Kevin, and Bill became the laughingstock of the scientific community for their fervent belief in The Crater Lake Monster. But they’ll show them, yes, soon they’ll show them all!!

Coming May 25th: The Crater Lake Monster!

There are some things in life that you’ll do without a second thought. Lend a friend a quarter. Help an elderly woman across the street. And if you’re like the lead character in The Devil’s Hand, join a satanic cult to sacrifice your fellow humans in the name of The Great Devil God Gamba.

Yes, when he encounters the owner of a mysterious doll shop, Rick Turner turns his back on his friends and family to embrace a life of voodoo in the name of the author of all lies. But to his credit, there wasn’t anything good on TV that night.

Once signing up for the cult, Rick is drawn into a sinister web of chanting and plodding drumbeats that make Meg White look like John Bonham. Will voodoo executions follow? They will! Will the victims relish the sweet embrace of death as a way to escape the incessant drumming? Probably! Should you immediately download this RiffTrax? The Great Devil God Gamba* commands** it!

ThinkGeek Flips On the Blinkenlights

from ThinkGeek:

Can you smell the BBQ?

Sumer is icumen in, Lhude sing cuccu! Okay, maybe it’s not QUITE summer yet, but Timmy’s been taking advantage of the warm weather. It’s all about the Hawaiian shirt and the charred meatstuff. It’s a good thing we don’t depend on Timmy to code anymore because he keeps skipping out on work early to fire up the grill.

And since we’re a little short on fireflies for our feasts, we love these jars full of Dreamlight Fireflies. They’re the perfect light by which to nom pulled-pork sammiches, don’t you think?

Dreamlights Fireflies in a Jar
Solar Powered Electroluminescent Robots Under Glass
When summer rolls through and pushes the chilly spring rains away, we’re left with sultry steamy nights full of bugs. Most of those bugs are of the annoying buzzing and bloodsucking varieties, but occasionally they’re of the pretty benign luminescent set. Call them fireflies or lightning-bugs, their blinky-backside broadcasts are as mysterious as they are beautiful. As kids, many of us would capture them in jars which, looking back, may have been a little cruel. Now you can have a solar-powered electronic analogue, cruelty-free, to mesmerize and delight you all year ’round!

MTV’s New Supernatural Drama “Teen Wolf” Premiers June 5

When you first hear the title of the new MTV supernatural drama Teen Wolf premiering on June 5th, Michael J. Fox and Jason Bateman fans probably will fondly recall the comedic film and its sequel about a teenage guy just trying to fit in and have a normal life when he finds out about the family secret… they are werewolves. Not the kind of wolves where you turn into one by getting bit but the kind that are born.

While MTV is using the same title, it’s certainly not borrowing the plot… other than maybe some awkward teenage “out of control” moments that appear in every teen drama or comedy. Teen Wolf promises to be more dark, gritty and sensual, along the lines of Vampire Diaries or Lost Girl, both supernatural dramas that can be taken seriously, unlike the more pop-culture glam versions of classic monsters seen in the Twilight saga of books and films.

“It’s sexy and it’s scary and it pushes the envelope,” says series star Crystal Reed, who plays Allison, a member of a werewolf-hunting family and the love interest of the newly-bitten werewolf Scott. Tyler Posey, who plays Scott, describes his character as “the cool kid that was never accepted into the cool crowd.”

There are some in-depth behind-the-scenes looks at the show on MTV’s website. If the trailer peaked my interest, the BTS videos cemented it. I can’t remember the last time that I watched a series on MTV. With this one, they may just be tapping into the sci-fi and fantasy fan base that keeps hungering for high-quality content as their favorite shows get cancelled from network TV.

Check out the trailer below and decide for yourself.

NBC Adds Modern Fairy Tale “Grimm” to Its Fall Schedule

from NBC:

Remember the fairy tales your parents used to tell you before bedtime? Well, those weren’t stories, they were warnings.

Detective Nick Burkhardt thought he was ready for the grim reality of working homicide in Portland, Oregon. That is, until he started to see things… things he couldn’t quite explain. Like a gorgeous woman suddenly transforming into a hideous hag, or an average Joe turning into a vicious troll. Then, after a panicked visit from his only living relative, Nick discovers the truth about his visions: he’s not like everyone else, he’s a descendant of an elite group of hunters known as “Grimms” who are charged with stopping the proliferation of supernatural creatures in the world. And so begins his new life journey — albeit a reluctant one at first — as he solves crimes with his partner who knows something about Nick has radically changed but can’t quite put his finger on it. Along the way, Nick finds himself unexpectedly getting help on some of the more difficult cases from Monroe, a guy who seems normal at first but is soon revealed to be what you might call a “big bad wolf.” Literally!

While the Brothers Grimm wrote fairy tales that children have adored for generations, imagine if the villains were real, and Nick was the only one who could stop them.

From executive producers David Greenwalt (Angel, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Jim Kouf (Angel, National Treasure) comes a new world of police work where all cases have a storybook connection… but not always happily ever after.

Grimm features David Giuntoli (The Deep End, Privileged), Russell Hornsby (Lincoln Heights, In Treatment), Bitsie Tulloch (Tyranny, Quarterlife, Lonelygirl15), Silas Weir Mitchell (My Name is Earl, Prison Break) and Sasha Roiz (Caprica).

New Japanese Pop Group Supercell Releases First Single “THE WORLD IS MINE feat. Hatsune Miku” in U.S.

Supercell: THE WORLD IS MINE feat. Hatsune Miku

from VIZ Media:

Sony Music Direct (Japan) Inc., a division of Sony Music Entertainment (Japan) Inc. has announced the U.S. release of the first single — “THE WORLD IS MINE feat. Hatsune Miku” — by the Japanese pop group Supercell. The track is available now on Amazon (Amazon.com) and iTunes (iTunes.com).

Supercell is composed of a group of innovative multimedia creators for the 21st Century that blends catchy pop sensibilities, technology-inspired vocals, and captivating anime-influenced imagery. For the new single, “THE WORLD IS MINE,” the group employs the electronic vocals of Hatsune Miku, the world’s first virtual pop idol. Hatsune Miku, whose name means, “first sound of the future,” is a digital female avatar and the most popular of the Vocaloid Character Series software originally created by Crypton Future Media using Yamaha’s Vocaloid 2 engine to create synthesized vocal tracks.

In Japan, the popularity of Hatsune Miku has become a national phenomenon. She has appeared in several video games and music videos and has also performed several sellout “concerts,” where she appeared on stage as a 3D hologram, backed by a live band. Most recently she also appears in a new commercial for the U.S. market for the 2011 Toyota Corolla. The spot is also available on YouTube, and since its debut on May 4th, the segment has received more than 700,000 hits.

Supercell is a league of creators led by composer/lyricist Ryo, who produces the music and writes the lyrics. Ryo tapped other creators to provide an array of vivid illustrations, animation, design, and photography for album booklets, CD cases and music videos. On “THE WORLD IS MINE,” artwork features illustrations by Redjuice, a member of the league. Led by composer Ryo, Supercell’s songs were initially posted on the Nico Nico Douga video sharing service in Japan and quickly garnered more than 20 million views, feeding a frenzied interest in the group that is now spreading to new overseas markets.

The self entitled album, supercell, debuted in Japan from Sony Music Direct in 2009, selling more than 150,000 copies. Same year, the group performed the ending theme song for the 2009 anime series Bakemonogatari. In March 2010, Supercell received the award for “The Best 5 New Artists” at the 2010 Japan Gold Disc Awards, a major record industry awards event. The Supercell track, “Kocchi Muite Baby,” created by Ryo and featuring vocals by Hatsune Miku, peaked at No. 11 on Billboard Japan’s Hot Singles Chart last July.
